Hypothetical QB/Cap Question

That just means slap dicks will get paid more. There won't be an influx of talent we will just being paying the existing guys more money. How much is a 3rd TE worth...a lot more now.

I'd be more happy with something like a Larry Bird Rule.

I love that idea, actually.

Gives teams who drafted well a bonus, as well as the player the chance to make more...and stay in his current city. Or, the NFL equivalent of trading for a guy and his Bird rights would make offseasons even more interesting.

Doesn't the NFL already have a rule that shaves the cap hit on some veterans?

Just the veteran minimum in the NFL. I'm actually a big NBA CBA nerd so bare with me. The NBA has a "soft" cap, whereas the NFL has a "hard" cap. Of course the NFL's cap is rigid, but NBA teams can navigate over the cap through various exceptions. Typically the best teams are over the cap, but still sign guys via the minimum exception, mid-level exception, and many others.

Every FA that ends the season on your team has some form of Larry Bird Rights: Non-Bird (misnomer), Early Bird, or Full Bird. These rights allow teams to re-sign their own players up to a certain amount depending on what kind of "Bird" they are.

This gives teams more leverage in keeping their own players without "franchising" them against their will. So say Team A only has $2m in cap space and has a high profile FA, but holds his full Bird Rights. Team B has $5m in space, and offers it all to the FA. Even though Team A only has $2m in space, they can outbid the former team via Bird Rights.

There are several restrictions that vary from player to player, and also strict penalties like the luxury and repeater taxes if you abuse these rights (the Nets are an example of this), but I'll stop now.
