Hypothetical QB/Cap Question

Suppose for a moment that the NFL decided starting quarterback contracts should be exempt from the salary cap.

Every other player on your team would still have to fit under a hard cap, but you could pay the QB anything he wants.

That'd certainly give teams (including the Panthers) a good amount of cap space. The front office could pay Newton whatever they wanted but still have space for Luke, Star, Kelvin, etc.

But there's a flipside...

Uncapped quarterback play would also mean the teams with money to spend could just overpay for the best quarterbacks available. It potentially takes us back to the pre-salary cap days when larger market teams could easily outspend smaller teams for the top talent in free agency. Thus, the current parity would quite possibly come to an end.

But then again, the cap would still apply to every other player. Smaller market teams could still build great rosters overall if they drafted well and spent wisely. And winning teams would ultimately make more money.

So would you favor this idea, or would you say the risk of the League going back to a "rich get richer" environment such as existed prior to the institution of the salary cap is too great?

I think it would be an insanely stupid idea.  The QB position is already over-valued, and this would make it even worse.  Can you imagine what a Paul Allen or a Jerry Jones would pay for Aaron Rodgers?

If anything, they need to get back to a game where a team that has an average QB can be plenty competitive if they have great talent elsewhere.

That just means slap dicks will get paid more. There won't be an influx of talent we will just being paying the existing guys more money. How much is a 3rd TE worth...a lot more now.

I'd be more happy with something like a Larry Bird Rule.

I know who Bird is but I don't follow the NBA much. What's the Larry Bird Rule?
