Panthers Predraft Visits/Meetings and What We Can Foolishly Read From Them

We were one of only two teams to work out star, us and the eagles

Thanks. So all four of our top 2 round picks under Gettleman have been worked out by the Panthers. That seems a pretty good way to narrow potential early picks down. It's probably not 100% that we take a guy who has visited but it's a good starting point.

I definitely agree with you. I think SS is the biggest need on the team. Harper is too slow and takes some terrible angles, he needs to be replaced asap. Boston looked decent, he should be given another year or 2 to develop , but it's always good to bring in competition.

unlike most people, i am actually fine with keeping harper around as depth. im even fine with Boston starting. Coleman is an enigma to me. i havent watched game tape on him so idk whether he is starting material or depth. regardless, i keep hoping Landon Collins falls to #25.... or at least that Gettleman drafts a safety worth his salt....

Harper as depth is fine.. he seems to be a good mentor and the young guys like him a lot, but i do not want to see him as the starting SS next year. Yea I haven't seen Coleman play much either so I can't comment on him. I'm not as big on Collins as a lot of people seem to be. I watched a few of his games on draftbreakdown. The thing I don't like about him is that he doesn't break down, square up and make the tackle. Instead of wrapping  up he turns his shoulder and throws his body at the guy.. I don't know how well that's going to work in the NFL. That style of tackling also leads to him lunging a lot and a lot of over pursuing. If he's there at 25 I don't think we can pass, but I have my reservations about him.

what do you think about Shaq Thompson? that kid has really caught my attention lately. im beginning to root for him to be our pick at 25.

Add Oklahoma DT Jordan Phillips to that list.

That's an interesting one and would certainly fit the BPA strategy were he to fall to 57 in the 2nd much like Kony last year. I do not think Gettleman would take him in he 1st round as his projection is late 1st-early 2nd.

The visit list might give you an idea of what positions we are trying to focus on but maybe not the round.  He seems to be looking at certain positions throughout the draft.  This would fall in line with value based drafting (trying not to call it BPA so we don't get that started).

For example we met with Parker, who probably won't be there at 25, but of the top 3 receivers he would be the most likely to fall.  But we have also met with receivers that would be there in later rounds such as Montgomery or Lewis.

Would be interesting to take that list and assign draft grades to each player.  Some patterns might appear.

He's definitely looking at guys that might fall. Most of the 1st round guys he has brought in are considered to be mid 1st rounders and it's similar with him bringing in some early 2nd round types. It's much harder to judge with the late round guys but there has been a pretty clear pattern for the types of early round prospects he brings in.
