Would you be mad if gettleman chose Todd Gurley as our first round pick?

I'm not sure we can say with certainty how good he'll be years from now when he's not even healthy at the moment. All the "he's a top 10 pick if healthy" talk is nice and all (though I don't personally think he would've been that high up there), but the bottom line is he isn't healthy.

Trent Richardson was also supposed to be an AP-level talent. Hell he went third overall, neither Gordon nor Gurley are regarded that highly. Picking him in the late first wouldn't be the end of the world but I'm hoping he'd be cleared to play by then.

But honestly, I can think of few ways that'd be a worse use of a first round pick than by spending it on an injured player at a position where you can find similar talent on the third day of the draft.

People are taking this "running backs are devalued" thing too far. Running backs haven't been taken in the first lately because the talent isn't there. Now there is a hit that has first round talent. Just look at what Marshawn Lynch does for the Seahawks.

I am more concerned with his ability to pick up the pass rush.

from the 4th round and beyond, you really start listening to the input of coaches and evaluaters more. I think that Gettleman has less influence on those picks.

Most morons can put together a solid 3-4 round draft. The good scouts/GM's make their money in the later rounds. It's the difference between the teams that are competitive every year and the ones that aren't.

I've honestly talked myself into being okay with Gurley...even in the first if Getts decides to go that route. Now, if Strong or a top OT is still there I may question it....but give me Gurley in the 1st, Fisher in the 2nd (trade up even whatever it takes), and the best WR or pass rusher in the 3rd and I'll love it.

I would love to get Gurley. DeAngelo has been cut, Tolbert is a FB and may be gone next year and who knows how long Stewart will be healthy.

Gurley is the best RB in the draft and I believe he will be a great NFL player. The Panthers still run the ball more than most teams so Gurley taking a share of the carries lessens the chances that he or Stewart would get injuried and gives the Panthers another offensive playmaker.

 

I would love a top rated LT, WR or SS @ 25 but I don't see any of the ones I want being available @ 25 (except maybe Strong). Gettlemen wants BPA and Gurley is easily a top 15-20 talent.

Torn ACLs happen.  You make it sound like Gurley was constantly nicked up or something.

 

Not that I am advocating for Gurley in the first round, but there is no reason to think he can't handle a normal NFL workload for a top-flight RB. 

 

Actually, he was constantly nicked up.  He missed games both of the last two seasons.

 

Gurley survived his freshman year as a 15 carry a game guy.  

 

His sophomore year (2013) he had a thigh injury against Clemson the first game of the season, limited to 12 carries.  Later in the year he had an ankle injury against LSU after 8 carries, missed next 3 games.  He then finished up the season averaging about 15 touches per game.  

 

His Junior year (2014), Gurley was again limited against Clemson.  This seemed to be coaches decision to have him split carries, limiting him to 15 touches (see a trend?).  Against their next 3 real opponents, UGA upped his touches to about 24 per game.   First game back from eligibility issues he has 29 touches when he tears his ACL.

 

I do not see any evidence that Gurley could handle a substantial NFL workload more than 10-15 touches a game.  UGA seemed to know this an used him accordingly.  During his injury plagued 3 year career, his average per game carries is 17 which a single game high of 30 carries.  In comparison, UAG rushed freshman Nick Cubb over 30 times in 3 games last year.

 

I do not deny he is an impressive player when he has the ball in his hands, but to take him in the first round to be an every down player seems misguided based on his past.
