Todd Gurley to visit with the Panthers

I'd take him in the 1st over any of the OT prospects, that's what I think about this year's group of OT prospects.

I'd take him in the first over any of the OT prospects to.  And I like Humphries, Peat and Collins a lot.  I even think Fisher could be a pretty good LT.  Gurley could be the closest thing to Petterson, since well Petterson.  If he can stay healthy.  He might be the 2nd best player in this draft behind Williams from USC.

If Gurley is there when Carolina picks in the 1st, I wouldn't mind snagging him. If he's there in the 2nd, sprint to the damn podium and don't look back.

I could imagine G-man getting his pick in for Gurley faster than the Ealy pick last year if he is there in the 2nd.

You can't talk about draft position with veteran players. Draft position ceases to matter after a season or two. At that point, the player is judged based on what he's done in the NFL. I agree that Spiller and Ingram proved to be unworthy of their 1st round draft positions, but they still proved to be valuable commodities in free agency. If you're gonna knock Spiller and Ingram for being 1st round picks, you have to admit that both McCoy and Murray would've been 1st rounders if those drafts were re-done today.

We're okay for right now at the RB position, but are we still okay if Stewart gets hurt again? You're comfortable with Fozzy being the bell cow? What about next year at this time if (more likely when) Stewart is released?

That's the thing neither Ingram or Spiller has done much thus far in their career. Spiller has been out played by UDFA Fred Jackson, while Ingram got out played by Thomas, Ivory and Sproles. All I'm saying is the rb position is interchangeable

I'm ok with Fozzy getting more carries and sharing the load with Tolbert if Stewart gets hurt. And if next season we get rid of Stewart we can draft a rb next year. We don't have to get ahead of ourselves always thinking about the future

He fancies himself as some kind of NFL renaissance man.

I don't care what era of the NFL you're talking about, 28 year old RBs with a long injury history and an ugly contract don't have much trade value.

The reality of the situation is that due to injury restraints, Stewart has only one 1000 yard season in his 7 season NFL career and in the past three seasons, he has only played in 28 of a possibly 48 games.  In the past 5 years combined, he has a total of 10 rushing TDs.  This after having 10 rushing TDs in each of his first two NFL seasons.

I like Stewart, but he isn't worth a ham sandwich on the trade market.

Jonathan Stewart's contract situation

2015: $8.3m cap hit (5th highest RB in NFL), $13.6 in dead money if cut ($6.3m if June 1 cut)

2016: $9.5m cap hit (3rd highest RB in NFL), $6.3m in dead money if cut ($3.8m if June 1 cut)

2017: $8.2m cap hit (5th highest RB in NFL), $4.5 in dead money if cut ($2m if June cut)

Combine that with what you said. Yeah, teams will definitely be hitting us up for that guy.....

Gurley, or any RB in the draft, makes a lot of sense for the Panthers. Stewart, while great, can't stay healthy and Fozzy is good change of pace back but he doesn't seem to be a guy that can be the primary. Gurley would represent tremendous value anywhere but the first round, but I'd expect the Panthers to be more likely to grab someone in rounds 4-7.

This is a very good running back class. We would be smart to come away with one.

Precisely. If Yeldon or Davis from South Carolina is there in the 4th or later then we need to hop on them in a hurry. Karlos Williams from FSU could be a potential steal as well considering how well Skipper could develop him, and his history as a former five star safety recruit could lend him to be an immediate asset on special teams.

Whose to say next year class is as deep as this one is. Gurley in an early round or not, we gotta take one this year.

Yep, they're a dime a dozen.  That's why Buffalo just traded a very good young MLB for McCoy and then gave McCoy a fat new contract.  It's why Philly paid Murray big time.  It's why Ingram got a decent contract from the Saints even though they're in cap hell.  It's why CJ Spiller got $9M guaranteed.

The media has overplayed the diminished value of RBs in today's NFL.  Good RBs are still very valuable.

I love me some McCoy but the Murrary contract was still dumb. He doesn't do anything overly exceptional and you're likely to only get 2 good years out of him before you consider replacing him again. Stewart is better by the eye test in my opinion.
