Panthers Are Signing Safety Kurt Coleman Per Voth

Charlotte Observer:

Coleman made it clear Monday he’s not coming to Charlotte only to cover punts and kickoffs. The free agent safety wants to be a starter again, and believes he has a shot with Carolina.

...

“Absolutely, without a doubt. I know I can start in this league with no question,” Coleman said.

...

“I want to start again. And they believe that I can come in here and have the opportunity to. That’s all I wanted,” he said. “And then you look at where this team’s heading. I don’t think this team is heading backward. They’re heading forward

...

“I’m excited. I don’t want this position handed to me. I’m going to go earn it,” Coleman said during a session with reporters at Bank of America Stadium. “And I want this team to be the best team possible.”

...

Coleman will find familiar faces in the Panthers’ facility. He joins a Charlotte chapter of the Ohio State alumni club that includes Ted Ginn Jr., Corey Brown and Andrew Norwell.

“This is the most I’ve ever been surrounded with Buckeyes. It feels good,” Coleman said. “I’ve usually been the lone survivor.”

end of 2009:

"No Ohio State player garners the respect senior S Kurt Coleman does. "He's a good leader who loves the game, and he's going to be good at the next level," Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said.

Coleman's teammates so respect him, they voted him the team's most valuable player, as well as the top defensive player. Coleman also was the only Ohio State player selected to both the all-Big Ten Conference coaches and media first teams."

ESPN David Newton:

"The only starter in the Carolina Panthers' secondary that wasn't replaced at some point last season was strong safety Roman Harper , mainly because there wasn't a player to challenge him. Kurt Coleman could be that player.

...

Harper, 32, is at the end of his career and is in the last year of his contract. While the Panthers love his leadership, he's not a fast as he once was.

...

Coleman:

"When you watch [the Panthers D], the thing that pops out is they're tough. I think I can add to that toughness."

...

"This is a great opportunity for me," he said. "I want to start again and they believe I can come in here and have the opportunity to. That's all I wanted. ... This is a great fit for me to help this defense, help this team get to the next platform. Hopefully, we can get to the Super Bowl and win it. ... [the Panthers are] just a total, caliber team that can go not only into the playoffs, but deep and then win a championship," Coleman said."

NFL.com:

"The Carolina Panthers added more youth to the secondary on Monday, announcing they signed safety Kurt Coleman to a two-year contract.

...

Coleman could [replace] 32-year-old veteran Roman Harper

...

The Panthers' defense catapulted to one of the best units in the NFL last season when Ron Rivera moved toward youth in the secondary -- starting young safety Tre Boston, corners Bené Benwikere and Josh Norman.

Coleman's signing..is the type of low-level addition that can mean more on the field in November than it does on paper in March."

NBC Pro Football Talk:

The Panthers continued a run of signings which will fail to move the fanbase, which was all hopeful they were going to spend some money this offseason.

The team announced they signed safety Kurt Coleman ... Coleman..could push for a starting job on defense, where they currently have young Tre Boston and old Roman Harper.

Coleman: “[The Panthers] have done great the last two years getting into the playoffs, but the great thing is they’re not satisfied with just getting there. ... I wanted to be able to help this team build into something special,” Coleman said. "I want to be a piece to help this team go and be something special.”

Doesnt exist? I knew who he was. I remember him starting at Ohio State and being with the Eagles.

Joking.

I am starting to remember him--at least I think I do.  I am happy about this signing.  What was your impression of him?

His draft profile was inconsistent reaction times and lack of recovery speed and that wasn't that long ago. Special teams decent signing, but if they actually planning on having him being our starter at safety smh. It needs to be addressed in the draft and not the way Gettle been patching it up since Mike left. Tre, good drafter. Now need to go find another one particularly in the 1st round

And it hurts what Trent Richardson bum ass did to him.

I am under this impression:

We decided to use free agency to re-sign some of our vets on the cheap to keep depth and consistency, but the main target was free agency.  Everyone we have signed short of Oher has been a ST ace.

I think we are adding a T, RB, and WR in the draft on offense, and a S, CB, and DE on defense in the draft.

ESPN beat reporter for the Chiefs Adam Teicher:

"[in 2014] Coleman was in the defensive lineup last season for 377 plays, or about 36 percent of the defensive snaps, mostly as an extra defensive back in passing situations. He was also the Chiefs’ fourth leading tackler on special teams.

...

the Chiefs should re-sign Coleman at the right price. His knack for the big play was important last season... He was a nice find for the Chiefs last season and shouldn’t be overlooked for his contributions to one of the NFL’s best pass defenses."

KCkingdom.com:

"Losing Coleman is a blow to the Kansas City Chiefs secondary, which ranked no. 2 in the NFL against the pass in 2014. Coleman ranked no. 26 among safeties on Pro Football Focus , despite only getting 396 snaps. Kurt Coleman was a versatile piece for the KC Chiefs in 2014, playing in sub-packages and both safety spots. He has even lined up at corner on a few occasions. Despite limited play, Coleman was productive. He led the team with three interceptions in 2014 , which was half of the team total of six. ... While Coleman’s defection hurts the versatility of the KC Chiefs secondary, his loss is offset by re-signing Ron Parker and the addition of strong-safety Tyvon Branch from the Oakland Raiders."

I had no issues with Nate Allen to be honest. the only safety I

couldn't stand was Kurt Coleman a few years back

Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation:

"Coleman spent four polarizing years in Philadelphia. During his tenure in Philadelphia, Coleman played in 59 games (19 starts) and served as quality special teams player. Coleman compiled 221 tackles, 11 pass breakups, seven interceptions and two forced fumbles. While Coleman's numbers were impressive for a former seventh round pick, his presence on the Eagles roster seemed to draw the ire of Eagles fans. It seems that his constant survival indicated a lack of talent and depth on the Eagles roster. He had a very rough reputation in Philadelphia, probably more so than he deserved. Coleman will likely be the fourth safety in Kansas City and serve on special teams, which is probably where he will be most effective."

Kurt Coleman was solid for Chiefs last season, led team with three INTs, all coming against [division rival] Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Good guy, too.
