Panthers Are Signing Safety Kurt Coleman Per Voth

I found a nice article that has me thinking this kid could end up being a major contributor.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article9673757.html

nice read

2/10/2015 Kansas City Star:

"Coleman only stands 5 feet 11 and 200 pounds, but the 26-year-old safety has a reputation as an aggressive, hard hitter, one he reinforced this season as the Chiefs’ fourth safety. ... I’m not there to play around,” Coleman said. ... "I try to hit as hard as I can.”

...

Coleman averaged 85 tackles, 4 1/2 deflections and three interceptions as a starter in Philadelphia in 2011 and 2012 for Chiefs coach Andy Reid.

...

The next year, Coleman saw his number of defensive snaps drop from 905 to 74 under new coach Chip Kelly [he was replaced by newly-signed Patrick Chung, who had a $3,000,000 cap hit]

...

Coleman signed with the Vikings as a free agent in April. But he never really caught on there, and was released during the last round of preseason roster cuts before he was snapped up by the Chiefs in early September.

...

But with the Chiefs, Coleman thrived with a lighter workload [as the #4 safety] behind starters Husain Abdullah, Eric Berry and Ron Parker.

...

Coleman said: “Obviously, I want to be able to play in an expanded role … but I love being able to come in and make plays when I do get the call.”

...

[Chiefs GM] Dorsey and the Chiefs’ defensive staff has shown a knack for finding cheap contributors in the secondary; last year, Quintin Demps had a career year in a role similar to Coleman’s, and ended up signing a one-year deal worth $1 million with the New York Giants. However, it seems unlikely Coleman comes that cheap ... Coleman is expected to initially ask for a contract that hovers around the $1.5 million to $2 million per year range... Coleman, however, could also be wooed by a chance to compete for a starting job, should such an opportunity arise."

I think that right there may have been what convinced him to sign with us. I assume the details of the deal haven't been released yet? We must be getting pretty low on funds I imagine. Maybe the 3 mil range or so (available)?

My brother is an Eagles fan and he hated him. Says he always lets people get behind him. Hopefully he only plays special teams

Coleman was a terrible starting safety for the Eagles (ranked worst in NFL) back in 2011-2012 when Coleman was 23-24 years old. For ex, at the end of 2012, this was the state of the Eagles safeties:

"In the case of safety, this has been a position that's caused much angst for the Eagles since the team let Brian Dawkins walk after the 2008 season.

Since then, Philadelphia has been missing a sure tackling, physical safety to help against the run. For example, last year the team's starters were Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen, who aren't the most hard-hitting safeties out there, especially the latter."

Since then Coleman didn't see much time on the field in the secondary until last season at age 26 as the Chiefs #4 safety. He looked pretty good and is just entering his prime (he turns 27 in July), so I'm sure a lot of people are curious how he looks like as a starting safety now with all the extra years and experience under his belt

In what way? Mike Mitchell was a former 2nd round pick with all the physical tools. Like so many others before him, it just never came together for him in Oakland.

Young and Hungry.. Looking to make a name for themselves instead of trying to steal a last check..

That's what I see in both of them..

Coleman:

"When you watch this [Panthers] defense on film, it's tenacious. That's my style of play. That fits me perfectly," Coleman said. "And one of the things I was really considering was which teams are really striving to be champions? I think Carolina is building and building. I can be another piece and I can help these guys get to that next level."

Coleman believes he has the ability to earn a starting role in the Panthers' defense.

"I think I have worked my way to be a starter. I know I can play as a starter and be very productive."
