I Was Wrong (Cap Room)

Recommended Posts

This is wrong.

Signing the rookies will only take up an additional ~$2.5M in cap space. Which would put us in the neighborhood of $8M in cap space if you want to already allocate that money. We will gain an additional $2M in cap space on June 1st due to DeAngelo's release being processed. Given that Gettleman has said he likes to have around $5M in cap space for emergency funds in case he needs to sign someone that gives us $5M in spending money once you factor all of that in.

TL;DR - We have $5M in available cap space to spend.

Draft pick contracts are set depending on what number they are. For our picks the contracts will be:

Round 1 pick #25(overall)=$1.45 million

Round 2 pick #57(overall)=$684k

Round 3 pick #89(overall)=$571k

Round 4 pick #121(overall)=$538k

Round 5 pick #153(overall)=$479k

Round 6 pick #185(overall)=$459k

Round 7 pick #217(overall)=$447k

                                             ----------

                               total       $4.628 million

If we get compensatory picks, those will cost money also. If we trade picks up or down, the figures will change obviously.

I don't think it's a much about the cap as it is building a team from within and rewarding our own guys. Creates a better lockeroom and team.

It has to be the right guys we reward and at the right price. Hurney rewarded the wrong guys at the wrong price.

As an example, not saying DWill and Stewie are P.O.S., they're great guys, but they were way overpaid for the position they play.

Because of the way the cap number for each is calculated by the top 51, the amount of money paid to draft picks and the amount of effective cap space you need are different numbers. All 7 of those signings will go onto the cap but they will push the smallest contracts that count on the cap off which are around $435k. That results in a net effective cap space of around $1.8M needed to sign to the draft picks. If you then want to add 2 of those $435k's back on to better simulate what the actual roster would look like with 53 then you have a total effective cap space of $2.7M needed for your draft picks plus or minus $500k depending on comp picks and trades.

Your math makes zero sense. Even if it pushes the lowest two numbers off (I don't think it does as Spotrac only takes the top 51 into account) then that's still almost 4 million.

Rookie Pool - (435,000 x number of picks) = effective cap space needed is the equation.

Rookie pool = 4,630,487 and we have 7 draft picks

4,630,487 - (435,000 x 7) = 1,585,487 cap space needed to sign draft picks

Look a few posts back to see the cost for rookies in each round/pick. They are higher for each round. Saints need nearly 8 mil to sign their picks this year.

I see what you did now. You're reading the chart wrong. The number 7 is the cost of the 7th rounder. The number 1 is the cost of the 1st rounder and so on. Add them all up and it comes to our 4.6 mil

The total cost for all 7 picks we have for 2015 is $4,630,487 which is basically the same as the post you are referencing which is what I used in the equation. It's slightly higher than his because he round to the nearest thousand.

You are adding 7 players with a cumulative 2015 cap charge of $4,630,487 to the top 51. However in doing so you must also remove players 45-51 from that same top 51. Meaning the net cap gain from signing all the draft picks is around $1.6M. The 7 draft picks minus players 45-51.

How many players do you think we have on our roster come September?

53 as is the NFL roster limit. Which is why I said you can add 2 minimum salary players(which players 52 and 53 will be) back into the cap to simulate the amount of space we would have on a regular season roster which takes the effective cap space needed to sign draft picks for a 53 man roster compared to the current top 51 to around $2.5M.

Then you wouldn't drop off 7 salaries. That would be 58 players.

The salary cap never accounts for more than 53 players. From the first day of the league year until the 53 man roster limit goes into effect Sunday before the regular season starts only the top 51 cap charges are counted. Following that and until the end of the season the cap counts the 53 players on the roster. You never need to account for more than 53 salaries.
