But we have to have all-pro players at every position!!!!

How will we compete against the super teams like the Hawks and Colts?

Even the Saints are signing guys!!!!

Ok I'm sorry but why does everyone love Dickson so much around here? He had 178 red yds and 1 TD, what about him is so special? Because he's a blocker? I just do not understand what makes him so loved and why it was so imperative to sign him to a three year deal.

He's a legit #2 TE.  He's not going to be an Olsen/Gronk/Graham, and I think most people understand that.  Hell, he could probably be the #1 on a handful of teams, although I wouldn't be too excited about it here, but that's reality.  Your #2 isn't going to be a superstar, and they aren't going to put up eye popping numbers, in most cases.  I'm pretty happy to have him here, and if we can avoid injuries to our line/fullback, his reception/TD numbers should rise.

Yep, time to cut everyone and sign all the big names in March!  That's when we win!  In March!  Yeah...

Keep in mind, that same team was within one play of beating the Pats.  An arrogant, stupid play call.

What other FAs would you bring in and/or trade for to improve the secondary?  Would their deals have fit into our plans versus what we'd have to give up to get them?

Gettleman has done well since he got here, and the team isn't perfect.  He's got a plan, he's deliberate, and he's going to make sure we keep our two foundation players here:  Cam and Luke.  They will set the tone for the team, lead the team.  Looking at the past few years of FA spending (since the lockout), there have been a lot more misses than hits.

I'll gladly play the slow game and grow our talent instead of going all Saints or Eagles this offseason.

A good post.  I hate that rabbit jumping up and down.  Makes me want to go rabbit hunting.  Ha!

I agree with a lot of what has been said in this thread. Very rational. Very pragmatic. I think the biggest thing I'm thinking about now is depth. Specifically in the secondary. I like Norman, Bene and Boston. Harper is meh but what can you do? But it's who is behind them that has me a little worried. We just signed that CB so there's that. I don't know anything about him. But even as I write this I'm sure most teams have this issue.

I've been looking at Taylor Mays (the tweener LB/S from CIN) and hoping we pick him up on the sly for peanuts. (But I recognize that's unlikely)

Initial reports from Pro Football Talk suggested that Mays could have upwards of five suitors -- including the Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins.

I guess I'm not really concerned about depth but I need something to worry about. It's March.

Gentleman is too conservative. He's a great talent evaluator but if you never bring in even mid level contributors, you're not going to win a Lombardi. Just look at The Patriots. They build through the draft AND free agency. They're never in cap trouble and they're always in the mix for a super bowl.

Yeah, well. Everyone loved Shockey because he had bitchin' tats and yelled at people. The hype of his 400 yards is pretty proportional to Dickson's.

Actually the Pats build mainly from Free Agency and are pretty mediocre in the draft. The Seahawks have built almost entirely through the draft with very little FA movement up until this year. There absolutely isn't one right way to do it, but whatever way you do it, you gotta make sure you're picking up talent.

The money has to come from somewhere and be accounted for.

I'm going to repeat that for you, because you don't seem to be taking the journey with the rest of us in the real world.

The money has to come from somewhere and be accounted for. It's real. The NFL notices when a team is over the cap. There is no hoping they don't notice.

This one is really going to blow your mind:

The Patriots and Packers have the same salary cap that we do. In fact, every NFL team does. The teams that manage it better seem to have more to spend. That's what our GM is trying to do.

But if it were up to some here, we would put ourselves right back up against the wall, then bitch next year about not having money to sign guys.

$13 million dollars is not a lot if money in NFL terms and we have to consider future contracts like Cam's and Luke's.

Shockey was a way better blocker than any TE on last year's roster and he could catch. Not saying he isn't perhaps overrated by some Panther fans, but his game was definitely more complete.

Looking back at last year: we didn't sign our first guy from another team until the third day of FA, and that was Mike McNeil. Four days later we signed Harper, then another 3 days until Cotchery. Ten days into FA we signed Underwood and Cason, then Webb a couple days after that.

That was it for March, then we brought in guys like Avant, Dickson, and DeCoud in April but then we basically did nothing until the draft.

So while we're moving slowly, we've stepped it up a lot from last year. It does, however, seem like we're still in the bargain bin (Teddy Williams?) but Ginn and Oher should (hopefully) be more impactful than most of the guys from last year.
