Shockey, Olsen and Tolbert.. Why did we get away from getting those level of guys?

I do understand that, Shockey and Tolbert didn't cost a fortune.

There's no Shockey and Tolbert out on the table yet...

Plus, as others have said, Shockey wasn't really wanted by many teams, but we decided to take a chance on him. It turned out in our favor. I guarantee we didn't sign him two days into free agency (I can't remember).

Tolbert was familiar with Rivera and took less money to play here. That doesn't happen very often.

Please try to understand that.

then why are you making this thread two days into free agency?

Those guys weren't signed quickly.

And the reality is we don't have any room at all, like it or not.

We have to sign the rookies, and we have to have room for cam and Luke to get their deals.

So lets just poo more money to spend.

We have signed 12 guys.

Yes, 10 of them were our own, but have have to keep the guys that make key contributions or spend money on other guys that you hope can replace them, but ya really don't know.

I think it is more like 12.8 million and a few restructured contract could create more. Admittedly, the Panthers are not swimming in available funds. They are in the bottom third. For example, the Dolphins only had 7 million in cap space.

The sad reality is that the Panthers should have much more cap space given it's talent current contract structurings.

Continuously restructuring contract....converting to guaranteed money....kicking the can down the road...just to max out the credit card on mediocre FA's is a recipe for disaster.

It is what got us in this mess...and us why the Daivts are in full fire sale mode.

This ain't Madden

In what universe does my comment even remotely infer I few the NFL salary cap and Madden as somehow comparable? There has already been media reports that Charles Johnson' s contract may be restructured to give salary cap relief if needed. The bottom line is that if there players that are targeted and meet a need then resources can be made available. Furthermore, this can be done with an eye toward the overall salary cap and long- term viability. Even something like signing Cam Newton to a new deal would likely create salary cap space.

Now maybe the Panthers saw no available premier players that interested them and this explains the bargain shopping. However, I refuse to buy the Observer's view that the Panthers have focused on building blocks. This was a sub 500 team last season and re-signing role players and signing other role players is not likely to greatly improve on that record.

In fact, after Gettleman's " no dollar store" only shopping this offseason, it was no unreasonable for me to expect that the Panthers, at a minimum, be in the conversation regarding some top flight available talent.
