So in your opinion.. Despite overwhelming evidence that it doesn't work, why do teams still splurge?!

Errr

2014 Patriots: Darelle Revis 2 years, 22 Million, Brandon Browner 3 year, 16 million

2013 Seahawks: Michael Bennett 1 year, 4.8 million, Cliff Avril 2 year, 15 million

I'd argue that those players also were some of the biggest pieces in each team being in the super bowl.

To me it all comes down to value. I think Gettleman, more than most decision makers, know a player's real value. And the problem is that pursuing a hot free agent very quickly turns into an out of control auction for his services. Sorry, Suh is a great player, but he's not worth 60 million guaranteed, let alone the potential 114 million he can earn, which he'll never get all of. No player except for franchise QBs are worth that much, and franchise QBs rarely ever hit free agency.

For example, a guy like Bulaga, I'll use him since his name comes up often. Using whatever metrics you use to quantify a tackle's ability, let's say Bulaga can be 150% of the tackle that Oher can be. Well that sounds good, but then you realize he's going to cost 400% the money, and he requires to be on the books for longer. How do we net gain with that move? Whose services will his contract prohibit us from gaining or even retaining now or in the future?

So why do so many teams still go insane in FA? Unfortunately, there are enough of them and the pressure so great to succeed instantly that a lot of these decision makers don't follow this convention. So long as players have the media and their agents to inflate their real value, you're never going to see an end to the ongoing cycle of unregulated contract signings and cuts that put dead money on the books for years.
