If he's at 25, can Gettleman pass on DGB?

I'm not criticising Cam Newton. I like him, he's one of my favorite players, but I'm not naive to dismiss the fact that there were concerns [true or not] when he came out of college. Now your opinion is that they are all lies, but for the people who are paid to analyse these talents, they didn't bring them up for no reason. There must have been some basis for saying what they did, and it was not some anti-Carolina Panther/Cam Newton agenda that some on these forums love to spout.

Like I said. I brought Cam's name up because he is one of the people who proved the experts wrong, and didn't succumb to the apparent character concerns and let it ruin their career. Cam proved them wrong, regardless of how true those concerns were.

DGB's concerns are well noted. But again, does he regret his mistakes? Has he learned from them and grown as a man? Will he prove his doubters wrong to become the next star receiver, or simply prove them wrong by not repeating the same mistakes when he turns pro?

These are questions we won't know the answer to for a while. But if a front office believes that DGB is a good kid that has made mistakes, but has learned from them, and will make sure they don't happen again, then that front office will take a leap of faith on him. If they don't believe that, then they'll pass on him.

Give me a URL then, contemporaneous to the time Newton left Florida, that says that he was DISMISSED by the university.

I'll wait for you right here.

And as to the all the other so-called "issues", you state that gosh other people didn't bring these things up for "no reason".

Cool.

Then there should be plenty of evidence you can provide for those "issues" too that made "other people" uncomfortable with Newton.

Looking forward to seeing all this evidence.

No one catches passes on the NFL exempt list.

I was listiening to a draft podcast last draft and Todd McShay discussed some of his biggest misses on player projections and noticed two issues that were dominant with a majority of them. Players with Injury issue in college and Off Field Red flags.

It seemed to be an interesting coorelation with the number of guys he spoke about, and like they say on Shark Tank, "for that reason alone....I would have to pass"

I'm gonna assume the Tiger in your name means Missouri.  Is that correct?  Or is it LSU or Clemson?

Todd McShay: Jameis Winston is the most polished QB the past 10 years besides Andrew Luck.  Hard to take anything he says serious.

We red flagged Lee last year even though we had him equal or a percentage point higher than Benjamin

DGB is a very polarizing players.  You can't deny that he has the tools to become an elite level player, BUT this is a very different NFL from even a couple of years ago.  Has he been humbled and humiliated to the point where he's going to be a boy scout the rest of his NFL career?  Maybe, BUT the off the field stuff has almost become more important in the eyes of the NFL for players with these kinds of issues.

The Moss story, the Rae Carruth stuff, Steve Smith's play "issues" and of course our "bad boy" of the year: Greg Hardy.  I'm pretty sure the Panthers are going to steer very, very clear of players with these kinds of issues.  Our owner has a very personal investment in the NFL, and it looks like he's going to do what he can to protect that as best he can.  You have to wonder if he feels wrong for continuing to put up with Smith's antics as that gets compared to what happened to Hardy?

If it was on talent alone, it's a no brainer.  But in the current NFL, I just don't see the Panthers signing up for another possible media circus the first time DGB get's a speeding ticket, or if his prior issues resurface once he's got a few million in hand and unsupervised freedom.  That's a sticky slope.

Absolutely correct

As I say in every DGB thread. Jerry Richardson walked in and ripped Randy Moss' s name off the draft board in front of everyone

How'd that work out? I'd rather trade our entire 1998 draft for Randy Moss....

This bullshit choir boy routine is old and a big part of why we haven't had back to back winning seasons...no doubt JR would rather have Bersin than Moss...and here we are 20 years later with no rings. Oh yea bring back Hardy too.

It's a good thing it's still 1999!  Nothing has happened to change the landscape of how public perception affects brand value!

Hindsight is 20/20 so it's really easy to be very selective in the cases you support.  Remember when that guy for the Rams literally killed someone (vehicular manslaughter I think), but played the next week?  How would that work in 2015?

Might a bad boy be a better player?  Maybe, but how much production are you going to see?  What is the success rate on players with great ability and terrible backgrounds?  How did that Lawrence Phillips guy workout again?

Character is important, and it's very important to the Panthers.  If you disagree, you can be angry (not productive or healthy), you can accept it (much better), or you can find a team that takes the good with the bad and see how often that works out, then come back in 10 years with proof of the success in the form of HoFers, Super Bowl Rings, and awards.

It does happen, but more often than not, guys with character concerns continue to have character concerns in their career which is not good when you're a millionaire...
