The Panthers absolutely need to give Jake Long an offer

See above.

I wouldn't call it "low risk" with the number of times he's been hurt.

Like I said, if you go this route, better be sure you have a backup plan.

How is it not low risk?  The injuries are irrelevant if there's little guaranteed money.  If he can't play, we're right back to where we were before.  If he can play and plays well, big win.  Hence low risk, high reward.

I don't think we pass on an OT that we like early in the draft because we have the likes of Long and Oher on the roster if that's what you're worried about.

We cannot go into the draft with two huge question marks at both WR and OT. Now my guy, Bulaga, was taken off the market before the games begun. Nothing we could have done about that. Even went back to GB for less money. When we look at the receiver department, there really is no one we like out there. The biggest receiver name that will come available perhaps later today in Dwayne Bowe, is not a burner. Plus for the past couple of seasons he has stunk up the joint.

So I'm telling you guys right now, we cannot enter this draft with KB still be our only receiver on the roster, and flipping Mr. Blindside himself as our starting LT. We need to put in a call to Long's agent, and bring his butt here. Now I know the guy is a little injury prone these last couple of seasons, but he is the only LT out there that will add something to our O-line. I was willing to pay Bulaga in the 7-8 million a year range, and I have no problem offering that to Long. As long as he could stay healthy, he would be the best LT we've had since Gross of course.

Should we have a doctor examine his shredded knee first?

Or just stuff a bag with money and throw it at him?

I think we define 'low risk' differently.

To be clear, I'm not against the idea of giving him a try (after an extremely thorough physical, mind you).

I just don't have a whole lot of faith in it.

How in the world do you define low risk then?

If signing a 29 year old former All-Pro LT with injury concerns to a team friendly prove it type deal isn't low risk, then what is?

Backing up one player with question marks using another player with question marks strikes me as too much risk.

I respect your opinion, but you and I disagree on this one.

Again though, if they try him out and think he's worth a shot, I won't scream.

I'll be nervous, but I won't be upset.

Going to have to do something at tackle. I can handle a talented drafted WR to come in next to KB but to expect a rookie and Oher to be our tackle options is really stupid, as was Bell and Chandler last year. We really don't need Cam, our future QB to be injured over something so stupid....(again).

Don't need a all pro or even a guy for long term besides the rookie. We just need a solid player.

Well like others have said, we could probably put in incentives or give him a two-three year deal where we could release him the following year if it doesn't work.  I do think we would have to have a better offer than other teams because as much as I hate to say it, free agents aren't necessarily attracted to us yet.

Also to everyone else concerning the retirement talk, I've heard the Rams would be interested in having Long come back on a lesser deal.  If they still would like to have him, perhaps they still think he could play if he could come back healthy.

But that's what I'm saying, what's the downside?  If he can't play, we release him with minimal cap damage.  I don't think you sign him and then sit back and say that all of our OT concerns are solved, let's scratch that completely off the board.  If he can, great.  We get a serviceable plug and play LT on the cheap and Oher and Remmers battle it out for RT.  You still absolutely look to add a young stud in the draft if the opportunity is there.
