The NFC South has not given Gettleman a reason to go out into free agency.

With the fire sale going on in NO, the absolute mess that is the atlanta falcons, and the worst team in the league in the Bucs, why would gettleman be handing out contracts this early?

 

Most of the action after 4pm today were in the form of trades (with draft picks on the line) and the signing of guys to large guaranteed contracts. The top named guys are the ones that get contracts this early, guys we cannot afford to hand out money to. We do not have Cam, Luke signed yet for next year (roughly 30-35 mil a year for those 2 guys). In total we only have 27 guys signed through 2016, that is only half a roster. So if the average salary for the other 26 guys were 1 mil a piece, then we would have the same amount of cap space as this season. Which does not help us.

 

The guys we have signed thus far were desperate to say the least. We need only guys that are we do not have to tie our financial future to. Oher and Ted ginn can be cut relatively painlessly, if we draft and groom well the coming year

 

The NFC South has allowed us to get away with murder. Our team is already vastly superior to the team they just played this past season, and we don't even need to lift a finger in FA.

 

Gettleman, by not doing anything is doing something. He is giving a vote of confidence to the players on this team that they will beat the competition in front of them i.e. the nfc south. He is playing the long game as all the teams in our division have already forfeited this year.

ding ding ding. Our roadblock hasn't been the south the past two years.

 

Our road block is the Seahawks if we want to think superbowl.  They've furthered the case this offseason. Not saying we HAVE to pay loads of money for some player, but in terms of who stands in our way.

on the other hand, look at what everyone in the AFC East is doing to try to catch up with the Pats

 

And none of those moves gave any of the 3 teams a QB to challenge Brady. Miami is cutting even more players to clear room for $uh, Buffalo added Matt Cassel (really?) with EJ Manuel, and the J-E-T-S are still stuck with Geno.

 

When you don't have a franchise QB, you have to take these gambles with the rest of your roster.

 

Everyone in the NFC South either has or soon will have, a franchise QB. Fortunately for us, our division foes don't have much more on their rosters beyond that.

Your viewshed is too narrow ,  your taking about regular season and  the goal is to win the playoffs and ride into the superbowl ( where the real competition)

The only way you are going to go into seattle and kick their teeth in is if you have an oline to do so. Olines are not fixed so easily or cheaply. It will not be fixed this year, even if gettleman drafts talanted guys. You ain't getting a day 1 starter at 25 in all likelihood.

      Man whether it's the Panthers or the Hornets it's crazy how many foolish talking heads there are in the local media. I just unsubscribed from locked on Hornets. Doug Branson with his cheesy mustache is an absolute clown especially when his partner isn't on. Talking about trading LaMelo because he can't win basketball games by himself with no semblance whatsoever of a legitimate Center. These YouTube personalities will say anything for a damn click.

      I’m hoping for that exact same scenario, two seconds would be big for us. I’d hope for 3 impact players. A WR/DL/DE that can contribute like this current class would be key to our rebuild.

      When I look at what I can find, a carryover problem from last season is our receivers are still unable to get enough separation on a consistent basis. Canales is certainly better at scheming them open, like how he sneaked out Thielen for a big play. But then he's also having Thielen running routes he frankly shouldn't be doing anymore. I feel part of the RZ issues is not really having anyone - after trading Diontae - who can make those quick cuts on a short field to give whoever is under center a wider window to throw. We also only have one guy with blazing speed in Thompkins and from what I could see, he's really used more to draw away coverage. I bring this all up because what Canales needs for sustained success - other than QB - is the other receiver pieces we'll be getting in the offseason.  Otherwise, I have to say that Canales isn't as afraid to be aggressive offensively. As others mentioned, still doesn't run the ball enough at times. Finally, I still feel his playcalls still doesn't line up with his mantra of getting rid of the ball within x amount of seconds. Maybe I count too slow. Oh, and I'm glad Canales first game after a bye looked good. I feared he'd be like Ron Rivera where we would fall flat on our faces.
