Boykin to Visit per Rapoport

This was said last year and look what happened during the season.

The biggest issue last year was the OLine and specifically the OT position.....along with injuries to several of the young guys that were penciled in to be contributors.

Everyone said that Gett blew it with the OT situation last year.  I say that he probably knew it was going to be an issue, but we did NOT have the cap space to pay ANY of the decent FA OT's last year.  We had to roll with what we had.  He was not going to come out and say that  Bell/Chandler were going to suck but we could not pay to upgrade them.

All any of you know is his 40 time and he wasn't a starter on the Packers. Gettlemen has stated again and again that you always need to be churning up the bottom of your roster. This is how we ended up with Fozzy. You keep turning over stones with some potential instead of staying with the same old stones waiting for something to happen.

I love this about Gettlemen. This guy knows talent and if he sees something in the kid it's worth bringing him in to compete. He's a large target (which Cam loves) who runs good route. You never know.

Fully agree with this. Looks like his hands are good, fights for extra yards, gets open, and improvises well when QB has to move around. I could see him in Seattle. But I would love to replace Bersin with him. That being said, we still need an upgrade at WR.

I cannot see what he brings to the table

Special teams abilities that our team severely lacks.

That's probably all. We aren't signing him to be our #2. He'll be here to play ST.

People see his position as WR and automatically assume it's in the cards for him to compete with cotch for the #2. WR's can play special teams too guys...

I'm impressed by four forced fumbles on special teams. That's the kind of stat that could win a close game for sure. Special teams ace that settles in a a WR3 or 4? Do want.

Great point.

This is from an Observer article when Bruce Dehaven was promoted:

The team’s philosophy

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said last month he is considering changing his approach to special teams, bringing in proven players for that phase of the game.

Insert Boykin.

There's this dark part of me that thinks that Gettleman hates to sign players who receive interest from other teams because he likes to show how "crafty" he is.

While I know that's not true, I do think it's absolutely true that Gettleman and his apparent 1995 outlook on free agency doesn't know how to respond when other teams start offering potential targets more than the 36 cents per/ he was planning on offering them.

I can't help but wonder if he's just out of touch with the current market.

He would probably tell the player to go to the other team..........like it was reported he did with Nicks last offseason,  when the Colts were interested also.

if last year was an anomaly, so will this year. the crop this year is very talented. if you put them in they will produce.

writers are speculating just like us. He's a #4/5 who will be a beast on ST. When called upon he can contribute but I gaurentee all of you he will be nothing more than a #4/5. he is exactly what DG said we would persue. ST guys

speed is on the way folks. it was ONE DAY of FA

The truth is no one knows what he'll be asked to do.

Some made peace with the Cotchery signing because they thought at best he'd be the number 3 and not the number 2.

Looking at Boykin you'd think there's no way he'll be anything more than a 4/5 guy but this is the same staff that trotted out Bersin (with him being the first look) on the most important 3rd down play of the year.

The people who are complaining do have a valid concern imo and the people who are "it's just March" well better not be the same people blaming Cam when he throws a INT when targeting Boykin on a crucial 3rd down in October.

We need a legit number 2 so we can groom our next rookie and take some of the load of Kelvin. This has been no secret since the day we drafted KB. Voth says we aren't interested in any of the 2nd tier guys and that's what frustrates some of us.

I'll make peace with Dwayne Bowe or Crabtree but please Gettleman, go get us Stevie Johnson!
