Boykin to Visit per Rapoport

Then they will start jumping up and down in October about benching Newton because he cannot throw for 350 yards...

These EXACT same posters did this LAST year and the year before...Complain all season about the offense...then in the off season mock anyone who suggest that maybe the FO could do this or that to upgrade the very unit they just spent the entire season crying about.

Of course by the time the season start they are back to their "Newton should putting up 30 points on the Seahawks...and leading the Panthers in offensive shoot outs."

Who are these exact same posters you're referring to?  Just curious.

I see a majority of level headed people trying to reason it out...then maybe a tad trying to get excited about back-of-roster fillers and then a few people freaking out over the situation.

Really, it's simple... When the only bidder is you, you aren't going to get any better.

What our FO has always shied away from, and in turn, has held us back, is the fact that in order to get better you're going to have to outbid other team's for a talented player's services.

That doesn't mean you have to go out and spend Mike Wallace money on a non-worthy player... But you can't immediately jump in the shallow end of the pool and call it a day.

Look at it like this... If this thread was titled, "Rapoport confirms Eddie Royal in for visit," the majority considered to be "bitching" right now would be ecstatic. Eddie Royal is not T. Smith, Maclin, or even Andre job, but he's talented and if we didn't sign him, someone else will and early. Furthermore, he fills the need... Gettleman himself said we desperately need speed and would address it, he then goes out and finds possibly the slowest receiver on the market and sets up a visit on the first day.

Brutal. If we go into this season with KB and a bunch of number four-fives I will be sick.

you can't just ignore Greg Olsen in that list. he's been the #2 option for a while.

just think if Tolbert was there to block pass rushers instead of having to use our second (maybe even best,) receiver in the backfield?

I'm okay with drafting a player but we have two big and paid receiving threats (KB and Olsen) a good RB in Stew, a potential change of pace back in Fizzy, a average 2nd TE, a good FB/RB in Tolbert. What more can we give him? What we need is our talent to develop on the line (Turner and Norwell) and get a decent to good Tackle.

A number 2 WR that can draw attention from KB and Olsen.. Would be nice..

There were literally only maybe 10 people on this board who stuck up for Cam when he was getting his head smashed in behind a AFL offensive line. trying to throw the ball to a CFL receiver unit.

The people ripping him apart were the same ones laughing at everyone "overreacting" at cotchery being the answer to upgrading our reciever corps.

I think where a lot of oversight comes from on both sides of this argument is in trying to find that dividing line between where we think an offer is too much vs. reasonable relative to the other offers and surrounding market still available.  We've got a smart yet very frugal GM in place and when it comes to the FA, it's a hard to predict situation when it comes to DG.

We will probably give out better contracts but I think the whole Target v. Dollar Store lines have clouded people's understanding of the dynamics of the FA marketplace.

There's this dark part of me that thinks that Gettleman hates to sign players who receive interest from other teams because he likes to show how "crafty" he is.

While I know that's not true, I do think it's absolutely true that Gettleman and his apparent 1995 outlook on free agency doesn't know how to respond when other teams start offering potential targets more than the 36 cents per/ he was planning on offering them.

I can't help but wonder if he's just out of touch with the current market.

This is the part that confuses me. And obviously FA is far from over and we may bring in a guy for all we know. But, if sounds like we had interest in Torrey...but the 9ers drove his price up past what Gettleman was comfortable paying. Fine, cool, whatever.

But if we do indeed end up just writing off WR all together, then I'll question it. I think we draft a WR early anyway...but for me, I've always figured we'd sign one mid-tier guy, as well as draft at least one. So we shall see.

Yeah I just can't understand it...

You have a guy like Moore, britt, or royal who have shown ability to produce in the NFL, but we'd rather wait around and bank on a rookie/unproven commodity?

Why not sign one AND draft one?

It's just stupid... Maybe he's just putting that out there in hopes of it driving the market down a little? But, I doubt it...
