Confirmed -- 49ers sign WR Torrey Smith for $40 million over 5 years with $22 million guaranteed.

Yikes.

As everyone (at least the reasonable people) thought, he was WAY too expensive.  8 mil a year with 22 Mil guaranteed is crazy for him.

Lots of guaranteed, but for a passing league it's not really bad.

He would have been the perfect #2 beside KB though.  We're the kids in the neighborhood that have to keep playing Super Nintendo while all our friends have the Nintendo 64 already.

Maybe, but we own ours, the other kids are renting theirs from rent-a-center.

That's Top-12 WR money.  I don't want to pay that for a #2 WR.

But Greg Olsen is worth top 12 WR money, as a tight end?  He isn't making much less.

For the record, that's not top 12 money, it'll be up there, but with the salary cap expanding each year and the emphasis on offense, contracts 3-4  years ago aren't really comparible.

Stop buying into the "at the right price", as if it's YOUR money, we're drafting well and that means we can offord to spluge on a player if it fills a much needed need.  Or do you believe Philly Brown is going to be amazing?  Maybe, unless the wind blows too hard and he's hurt again.

Have fun watching the Seahawks crush people with their new TE.  Watch the Colts with Andre Johnson even though they didn't NEED him, they'll be in the playoffs for sure.  You have to surround your QB with talent, via draft and sometimes FA.

I am fine spending the money if the player is worth it.  Torrey Smith isn't.

And yes, I think Olsen is.  He's much more valuable to our team than Smith would be.

This was based on CURRENT WR salary too (was actually Top 15, not 12)

Olsen is valueable, but he didn't solve our lack of speed on the outside problem last year.  I'd argue someone like Smith with speed is as valueable.  I get it, Olsen is a good ole' boy and Panthers fans love people like that.  They love routing for the good guys like Olsen, Bersin, Philly Brown.   They are both valueable, and fill a need, hence why Olsen was a good sign and Smith would have been as well.  When this FO shows they are capable of filling needs, I'll have more patience, but this is a team that went into last season with Byron Bell and Chandler on the offensive line and didn't realize they had better players than them until it was the last resort.  This is a team that let DWill stall drives for years while better options were there.   Not to mention a team that has Shula still coaching.

Yeah,  but we have Bersin,  Ginn and maybe Shorts,  if the rumors of our blockbuster interest in him are true.

Like I said in another thread..  The Panthers use FA to only sign players that really no other team wants..  Scared shitless of any kind of bidding war.....so no interest is even really thrown in the direction of good players.

Some  are brainwashed into thinking that unless we have over $40M in cap space,  that we shouldn't even sign a mid tier FA.
