49ers are officially releasing Stevie Johnson

Everybody looks like a #3 with Kaptain One-Read.

This dude had Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree, and Stevie Johnson last season... all of those could be argued to be low end #1's to high end #2's.  Hell, they even had Brandon Lloyd as well, who isn't bad himself.

Not to mention Vernon Davis who was widely viewed as a top 5 TE.

Yet they still bitch about weapons for Kaepernick.  Outside of QB, they were arguably the most offensively stacked team in the entire league going into the season.

I'm still wondering how the hell did they get that good of a receiving corps.

I am very happy about it, we just cant expect to coast on a sub .500 record is all, i do see us having consistently winning seasons though

I don't think the Panthers think a 7-8-1 record is a good thing. I also don't think they want to do something stupid that sets us back. Slow and steady wins the race.

Gettleman can clearly draft talent, which is how you stay as a contender. The price on rookie contracts versus free agent contracts is absurd.

The team will continue to draft well, sign our nucleus to good contracts, fill in some gaps with free agents, and then maybe, MAYBE, when we are in a financial position to make a run at somebody, we will get a big piece.

Even then though I wouldn't hold my breath though.

I know you laid out a few very small, select samples of free agent WR's that worked out ok, the fact of the matter with free agents is that you are ALWAYS paying them based on what they've done, not what they will do in the future. Gettleman doesn't strike me as that sort of risk-taker.

fug if I know... what was hilarious was 49er fans bitching last season about Kap not having anyone to throw to

On top of that they also have (or had, IDK how it is now) a fuging stacked offensive line along with Frank Gore

That 49ers team over the past couple of years has been one of the most stacked teams in recent memory IMO, even more so than the Seahawks.

I think their failure in that regard can be entirely traced back to going with Kaepernick over Alex Smith. Their offense, with a power back (Frank Gore) and then five possession receivers (Boldin, Crabtree, Johnson, Lloyd, and Davis) is perfectly set to be a standard West Coast scheme. Smith is derided for checkdowns, but he's extremely accurate, and both basically define the West Coast scheme. Harbaugh seemed to have this irrational obsession with getting a mobile, strong-arm quarterback, though... Kaepernick fits that mold. He just can't throw worth crap.

In hindsight, it's a terrible move. Alex Smith has demonstrated he can be mobile (he rushed for 400 yards in 2013) and Kapernick's erratic accuracy has proven to not work with that receiving corps. It might take years for the Niners to recover.

It is kind of an odd complaint for a QB that's known not to get past one read

I would love to have Stevie J, but I believe that G-man has to be thinking that Cecil Shorts may ultimately end up being the better option because he would provide the same type of play for perhaps a million or three less.

I think those expecting another FA WR signing are going to be disappointed.

With the depth in the draft at WR, I just think that we will roll with who we have an add a WR or two in the draft.

Guys like Smith, Nicks, Crabtree, Johnson, would all be nice.  But Gett will fill the need with a MUCH cheaper rookie.
