Our wide receiver corp

In my opinion I see a lot of changes coming to the WR corps, my projection post camp is as follows:

1-Kelvin Benjamin

2-Roookie/FA

3-Ginn Jr

4-Rookie/FA

5-Cotchery

In my opinion Ted Ginn is an upgrade over Brown, and fills the 3rd receiver role as well as handling the return duties which to me makes an UDFA like Brown expendable. Bersin is easily replaceable via the draft or free agency, he offers no upside on any level, Wofford connection can only hold him for so long. I think Cotchery sticks just for veteran leadership, depth and reliable hands.

I really see us adding more viable threats aside from what we fielded last year, because honestly I don’t think guys like Philly or Bersin make too many other NFL rosters, they benefited from a mass genocide of that group last off-season as we cut/lost 4 wide receivers, and didn’t have the money to invest in better quality FA’s.

I would really like to see a progressed Stephen Hill to pair along with Bejamin, however that may be a pipe dream, I don’t know. But with him opposite Benjamin stretching the defense and Olsen, Benjamin, and a guy like Ginn or a draftee to also take the top off I think we could have the quick strike ability and speed we missed to compete vs top tier teams, finally catching up to our stout defense.

Interesting.  I think they like Brown and he will continue to develop.  He is big enough (5'11")  and versatile enough (speed, etc) to play any WR spot.   I do not think he is restricted to a slot WR, although he will play there this year, IMO.  I think we are going to add a #2 and we are done.  However, I like reading alternate perspectives with insightful explanations.  We shall see.

One big reason for the playoff loss to Seattle was his turnovers.  I'm not trying to disparage Newton but an honest debate would have to factor in the QB when discussing the quality of the passing game.

QB, WRs, OL, play calling are all factors in a complex situation. I don't think you can simply point out WRs. We actually had more yards and more completions this season than with Ginn and Smith and LaFaell the year before.Unfortunately we also had one less passing TD as well.

Cam isn't blameless in the least.  The 1st INT was essentially as good as a punt.  It was a long downfield bomb on 3rd and long.  The 2nd INT was bad.  I don't think Cam saw Kam lurking there.

What I'm saying is that you can't give a young QB a shoddy OL and one legit NFL WR and then try to place the burden of the blame on him.

I think Cotchery and Bersin are both very possibly cut before the season depending on who we pick up.

I'd expect to see our WR look like this for the season:

KB

Free agent (mid-tier like Stevie Johnson, Moore, Britt)

Brown/Ginn

Rookie

Bersin probably.  Cotchery maybe, but it depends on who else we sign/draft.

We lost that playoff game to Seattle because we didn't have the firepower to keep up with them in their own house.

The only speed we had at WR was a hobbled Corey Brown coming off a shoulder injury.

Turnovers or not, you can't expect to go on the road and keep up with a team like Seattle every possession under those circumstances. If we want to make a playoff run, we need to explore all options at upgrading the WR core. It's as simple as that.

Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010 while rushing for 51 yards (Colts rushed for 99).

Packers won the Super Bowl in 2011 while rushing for 50 yards (Steelers rushed for 126).

Giants won the Super Bowl in 2012 while rushing for 114 yards (Pats rushed for 83).

Baltimore won the Super Bowl in 2013 while rushing for 93 yards (49ers rushed for 182).

Seahawks won the Super Bowl in 2014 while rushing for 135 yards (Broncos rushed for 27).

Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2015 while rushing for 57 yards (Seahawks rushed for 162).

So, exactly once in the past six Super Bowls has dominating the running game resulted in a Super Bowl win.  Sorry, I don't count 114-83 as "dominating".  But, even then, only two out of the last six Super Bowl champs rushed for more yardage than the losing team.  Three out of the last six Super Bowl champs actually GOT dominated in the running game and still won.

Historically speaking, dominating the running game was the way to go, but recent history says that it doesn't mean nearly as much these days.

you gotta get there too, it is about the whole.

Understandable if some wouldn't want to get AJ if we are trying to get younger but at the right price I wouldn't mind him. He could help KB along and stretch the field. If we couldn't get him at a reasonable price then I would pursue Denarius Moore from the Raiders who is young and still on his rookie contract.
