that's still a pretty high hit for a guy to sit on a bench… they must think he's got starting potential

Absolutely they are going to try and start him. But what's nice about this deal is the lack of long term damage. Next year if we cut him, it's a small cap hit. Anthony Collins is on the Bucs books for another 4 years, that's way worse.

My thoughts.  I wonder how much Matsko had to do with the decision?  I watched a few Titan games on NFL rewind.  Oher was not that bad.  He seemed to be favoring his foot at times.  He bends and reaches at times, but when he moves his feet, he is very good.  I think Matsko, this system (featuring a running game), and a healthy foot will make him better than he was last year in Tennessee.

Those numbers definitely say "stopgap" to me.

But with it being two years, if he were to magically return to his old form, they'd have an inside track.

This.  Contract is definitely structured as a stop gap signing but if he works out, we can extend him next year around this time.

The backup OT from Dallas Jeremy Parnell just got a $30m, 5-year contract with $13 guaranteed.

That is going all in.

We didn't.

id much prefer that deal to the Oher deal.  Parnell is a solid starter.  pay an extra 2.5 mil per year to get sure fire starter. He started the second half of last year for Dallas and was better than Free.

That said, this Oher deal is about as cheap as you can realistically expect to sign him for.  I was worried it would be about a mil a year more .

If he doesn't make the roster, we carry no additional dead money. The dead money and cap hit this year are a wash. This is the quintessential "prove it deal". If he plays well this year and sticks around next year, he's set to make some decent money. If he doesn't we cut him after this season and save $3.25M on next year's cap.

Thanks for this explanation! Makes it much clearer than numbers splashed across a page!

I didn't see Parnell play (or pay attention) but I hear he is the real deal.  He bounced around on practice squads for a while, eventually making his mark when given his chance.  I hope Remmers is a similar story.

I get the feeling that Oher will be in a competition in camp.  $2.5m is good insurance at LT and RT.  We could try Remmers at LT, draft a LT, etc.
