Some stats and numbers that show Gettleman is wrong for not pursuing a top flight WR.

So during this free agency period, all I have heard from my fellow. Panther fans is "im glad Dave is sticking to his bargain shopping mentality." Or "We dont need to overpay for a top flight WR free agent." Or "Build through the draft and sign cheap free agents to one year deals!" Or how FAs end up not living to the expectations and end up being a bust. So I went and did research on some of the top FA WRs signed over the last couple years and then listed a few of the "bargain bin" WRs signed in the same period.

What I concluded is like everything in life, you get what you pay for. Most if not ALL the top flight FA WRs signed to big money contracts over the last couple years actually DID end up living up to the hype and put up some real impressive numbers, so my question is, why is this organization still so stingy in not paying the doe and bringing a REAL WR that could be our number 2 for years to come.

The two players on this list that caught my eye are Vincent Jackson and Desean Jackson, the reason being is because Panther fans kept saying how these players are "divas that would just cost too much." Well stats dont lie, both ended up putting up very solid numbers, on pretty bad teams might I add.

Vincent Jackson- Bucs

2012- 1384 Rec yds, 8 TDs

2013- 1224 rec yds, 7 TDs

2014- 1002 yds, 2 TDs (keep in mind, his drop off is due to new offensive scheme on top of a mess of a QB situation and a team that went 2-14)

Desean Jackson- Redskins

2014- 1,169 Rec yds, 6 TDs

Steve Smith Sr- Ravens

2014- 1065 rec yds, 6 TDs

Mike Wallace- Miami Dolphins

2013- 930 rec yds, 5 TDs

2014- 860 rec yds, 10 10 TDs

Golden Tate- Detroit Lions

2014- 1331 rec yds, 5 TDs

Eric Decker- NYJ

2014- 962 rec yds, 5 TDs

Brandon Marshall- Chicago Bears

2012- 1508 rec yds, 11 TDs

2013- 1295 rec yds, 12 TDs

2014- 721 rec yds, 8 TDs

Emmanuel Sanders- Denver Broncos

2014- 1404 rec yds, 9 TDs

Now a list of some of the "bargain bin" or "value play" type WRs signed on the cheap the last couple years.

Jason Avant- Carolina Panthers

2014- 353 rec yds, 1 TD

Jerricho Cotchery- Carolina Panthers

2014- 580 rec yds, 1 TD

Santana Moss- Redskins

116 rec yds, 0 TDs

Nate Burleson- Cleveland Browns

2014- 461 rec yds, 1 TD

Tiquan Underwood- Carolina Panthers

2014-440 rec yds, 4 TDs

The records of the teams you're listing as examples here...

Bucs: 2-14, missed playoffs

Redskins: 4-12, missed playoffs

Jets: 4-12, missed playoffs

Bears: 5-11, missed playoffs

Dolphins: 8-8, missed playoffs

So, to sum it up, five of the eight teams whose strategy you're suggesting we should imitate had losing records or went 500 (Dolphins) and missed the playoffs.

Of the other three who did make the playoffs, only one actually won a game (Ravens) and the receiver they signed wasn't a free agent.  He was cut.

The Panthers, whose strategy you decry, are the other team that made the playoffs and won a game, thus getting farther into the postseason than almost all of the other teams whose MO you think we should follow, instead of doing what we did last year.

So basically, you want us to take our cues from teams who did worse last year than we did.

This is a really lousy argument.

The only teams you listed you there that were playoff teams were the Broncos and lions, who got both of thier FA WRs are resonable prices. The others overpaid and missed the playoffs. Hm. Wonder why that is.

You know who is is a playoff team that you listed

The Carolina Panthers with Jerricho Cotchery
