But that's the thing that really irks me... people keep making excuses as to why we can't or shouldnt sign this guy or that guy, and then you look at the niners, colts, etc., and these teams are constantly upgrading their WRs to give their QBs talent to throw to.

Gman's drafts have been superb, but you have to supplement those with legitimate, established talent at some point.

I know FA hasn't even officially started yet, I'm just saying we have to get into the mix. We have to make moves of substance... signing a guy like Crabtree is like signing a younger, better version of Cotchery, so that doesnt really help. We need speed and we need it from a proven guy like Smith or Maclin, imo.

the colts have $36 million in cap space available.  what big name wideouts have they brought in in free agency anyway, hakeem nicks?  ty hilton, fleener, moncrief-all draft picks.  the biggest move they've made recently was trent richardson and he was a massive bust.  the 49ers gave stevie johnson 11 million guaranteed and he was underwhelming (which could be a quarterback issue admittedly) and he's about to get released

yeah i get it they're trying and it's discouraging to see the panthers playing moneyball but we have two major contract extensions for franchise cornerstones to deal with.  the 49ers don't have to worry about that and the colts have the wiggle room because they aren't coming out of the salary cap equivalent of the hindenburg disaster like the panthers are.  cam is going to get $20+ million per year and luke will probably get record breaking money too and the franchise will be healthier if, after those get done, there is still something there to work with.

No. Running away hairball was stupid but they bring in talent during FA. Something we can't do because we don't have balls.

yeah haha we have no balls that's true

that's why our GM cut the greatest player in franchise history and trusted a rookie to be our number one wide receiver.  and then we won the division.

that was because he has no balls

Stevie Jounson is too well known. He's not obscure enough a name for us to go after. We only sign FAs that are A. On other team's practice squads or B. Are names that no one has ever heard of.

Pushing hard for that 'dumbest post' title?

All great points... I just really hope this is the year, after many years of neglect, that we throughly address the WR position within our means.

And I would love to do what the Colts have done with WR, but that's why I feel it's so important to address it the best we can in FA, because I dont ever see us drafting 4-5 wrs over a two to three year period.

Like I said, then some in the Huddle will talk about how we don't need to make moves in March or April to upgrade our already mediocre offense...

Then they will be the first to create threads about "Why isn't Newton scoring 35 points and throwing for 350 yards"?

And keep in mind, the year prior to Rivera/Newton the Panthers had the worst offense in the NFL.

The colts don't have to do anything big in FA because they spend the rest of their resources in every way to surround their QB with talent/ a level of comfort.

After Luck was drafted, they got him his college roommate who is a TE in the very next pick, his college OC, and made sure they kept Wayne.

Those moves ALONE is more than the Panthers have done for Newton in 4 years.
