Saints sign Mark Ingram to 4 yr / $ 16 million contract

Don't bother, this board isn't going to listen to you. Years of passing on talented players who could've won games for us (due to Hurney's misguided notion of building through the draft and draft alone) has led Huddlers buying the cap excuse and using it as a crutch.

If you're interested though, here's a nice article from former Packers VP and cap manager Andrew Brandt who explains just how easily manipulated the cap is.

If only our GM knew as much as you. We could have signed Cobb, Maclin, Andre Johnson and all the tackles.Throw in hardy and suh too, cause, you know, the cap doesn't matter.

Pro Football Focus:

"In somewhat of a surprise move, the Saints re-signed Mark Ingram to a four-year, $16 million contract on Saturday. Despite New Orleans’ extremely shaky salary cap situation, the team clearly felt that it needed to prioritize its 2011 first-round investment.

...

Ingram’s 2014 breakout wasn’t entirely a surprise to those who watched him down the stretch in 2013. He racked up 249 yards on 44 carries (5.7 YPC) over the team’s final four games, including Wild Card win in which he all but single-handedly put Philadelphia away in the second half.

...

this past season, he was extremely effective ... The 5’9/215 bowling ball played a career-high 42 percent of New Orleans snaps and handled a hefty 69 percent of the team’s carries when active. He averaged 4.3 yards per carry over 226 carries and scored nine times thanks to a league-high 10.1 rushing OTD . Ingram was a workhorse at the goal line, registering a league-high eight carries from the opponent’s 1 yard line and 20 within 5 yards. A better pass-catcher than many realize, Ingram hauled in 29 of 30 targets (97 percent) for 145 yards.

...

My early 2015 16-game Ingram projection is 245 carries, 1,027 yards, 27 receptions, 206 yards and 11 offensive touchdowns."

I don't understand the people acting like Ingram is a scrub... I hate to say it, but that is a really good deal for the Saints.

He's been in a crowded backfield on the most pass happy team in the league his entire career.  As they started going towards Ingram more towards the end of 2013, and 2014 he's looked pretty good IMO.

He's primed for what will probably be his best season yet this coming year now the he's going to be THE guy, and they probably start slowing down the passing game a tad now that Drew is getting older.

What's the deal with the Saints high-priced OG's? If they can't re-sign them because of this and their other problems, well that would be just fine.

My saint buddies tell me their guards were absolute trash last season.........they were the reason Brees couldn't step up into the pocket without getting pounded.        Idk though.

Only a few players that can give them the cap room they need.

Junior Galette: $12.5 million roster bonus can be converted to signing bonus & spread out over 4 years; can't be cut, dead money more than cap saved

Jahri Evans: $6.8 million base salary can be converted to signing bonus; can be cut and get $6 million cap saving

Jimmy Graham: $2.9 million base salary and $5 million roster bonus can be converted; can't be cut, dead money more than cap saved

Ben Grubbs: $6.5 million base salary can be converted to signing bonus; can be cut and get $3.6 million cap saving

Curtis Lofton: $2.65 million base salary and $4.5 million roster bonus can be converted; can be cut and get $4.25 million cap saving

Cameron Jordan: $6.969 million base salary in last year of contract; could be extended to reduce cap charge

Brodrick Bunkley:$4.4 million base salary can be converted to signing bonus; Saints have stated they won't cut him

David Hawthorne:$2 million base salary and $2.5 million roster bonus can be converted; can be cut and get $3 million cap saving

Marques Colston and Jairus Byrd have already re-done their deals, so they can't help again.

Breesus has said he's not willing to re-do deal again. The Saints have some work to do either pleading with Breesus or pleading with a few of the guys on that list.

2 things. Bunkley took a pay cut of $3 million to remain with team.

Brees hasn't said he wouldn't restructure. And I'm not sure where you're getting the "again". He's never touched his deal. the reason it's not being reworked is because he's got 2 years left on his deal. $22 million cap hit this year. $27 million cap hit next year. He's not a candidate for a restructure. He's a candidate for a pay cut or an extension.

Why are they talking as if Ingram was a beast? Dude has never topped a 1,000yd season since he's been in the NFL, how much did they expect him to get?

Megatron and Gronk both struggled with injuries this season.  Meanwhile, Ingram had by far his best pro season.  Horrible comparisons.

Well, I was just going to express why Ingram was paid, but I see G-man Jack (with the stats of PFF) did it for me.  Some of you are vastly underestimating Ingram.  Every defense isn't the Panthers' defense that largely made some great backs look quite ordinary once they got some continuity and their wings up under them.  Ingram dealt with some injuries also, and still produced over 1000 all-purpose yards last year.  He has also played behind Sproles and Pierre Thomas for a good part of his career.  The Saints, like any team, want to get him on the field more, not less.  He was a beast last year during many games.  And the fact is is that he is still young, in years and tread.

From what I hear on the Saints board Breesus is not taking a pay cut and the only thing Loomis is extending to Breesus is a middle finger when Loomis says he's not offering Breesus a contract extension.

As for Bunkley, a DT who's game was quickness and is on the wrong side of 31, better to bag $4.4 million than have to settle for little more than vet minimum. Glad he took a pay cut to stay and be pushed around by Kalil, Turner, and Norwell.

Can't wait to see your re-structures and cuts before Tuesday.

So maybe we could have resigned Hardy

And say goodbye to Josh Norman next year? Or let Luke and/or KK leave the year after that? And deny Frank Alexander his chance at redemption? Or deny Kony Ealy opportunities to get on the field and develop further?

There's not a consistent winner in the NFL that hasn't let a big dog walk, and he'll be the last one to head out for a while.
