Panthers had contract talks with Ed Dickson

Here's the piece of the article the OP was referring to:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article12696068.html

Olsen is one of two Panthers tight ends who have had contract talks with the front office. Ed Dickson, who had a strong finish to his first season in Carolina, will become an unrestricted free agent next week.

Olsen said he’s seen Dickson a couple of times during the offseason, and would like to play with him again.

“Ed became a big part of us as the year went on,” Olsen said. “I’m sure the team and his agent have spoken.”

Not really thread-worthy yet, IMO.  I'm sure we'll hear something in the upcoming days.

Dickson did start to produce at the end of the season but he still leaves a lot to be desired as a blocker.

If we're going to sign a bottom of the barrel free agent tight end then we should look at someone like Lance Kendricks.

Kendricks is an elite pass and run blocking tight end and he's also a solid red zone threat. Kendricks can also create match-up problems as he's probably faster than most outside linebackers not named Thomas Davis.

Don't see him in the crystal ball. See Rotoworld:

Free agent TE Lance Kendricks is seeking $4 million annually.
A blocking and red-zone specialist, Kendricks had a 27/259/5 line as the No. 2 tight end behind Jared Cook last year. The Rams are fully expected to let him test the open market. Kendricks will be one of free agency's bigger overpays if teams are willing to meet his asking price. Feb 21 - 5:04 PM

meh. if we can sign him on the cheap then yeah he'll do.

i would really like to target a good pass-catcher at the position though. some of cam's nastiest throws have been lasers up the seam to the TE so if we can get two threats and design packages that isolate hapless bitch safeties that have to respect both ends (and kelvin benjamin) we might just see a renaissance of 2011's offense

Speaking of threats (possibly an empty one),I wonder what this means for Brandon Williams.  Are we ever going to see the next rendition of Julius Thomas on the damned field?  I am tired of them teasing us.  The kid has had time enough to learn how to be an average blocker and get some serious action.

Yes, when I think of a developmental player, and we have a few (Williams, Chandler, Foucault, Bersin, etc) I expect to see results (growth) within a year and surely after 2 seasons, it is time to fish or cut bait.
