QB pay transitioning?

stirs

Recommended Posts

With 4 time SB winner Tom Brady being middle of the pack as far as QB play and with Peyton Manning taking a big paycut, are teams finally getting the notion that they have been overpaying for guys like Matty Ice and others?

Are they understanding that without a team that at least has a few other stars, their chances are not good for making the big game?

Not sure, but this will be an interesting offseason.

I don't think so. The main reason, in my opinion, that Tom Brady has taken team friendly deals is because his wife makes more than him by a large margin. He realizes that the money he saves the team directly impacts their ability to win and the difference in him being paid more is not worth it because his supermodel wife is so insanely rich.

Manning on the other hand has a huge amount in endorsements (the most of any player I believe) so again the difference of money is less important than winning.

The other QBs have less of a cushion than they and therefore "need" the money. And winning in this league starts with the QB. Granted that perhaps a little too much focus is on the QB but it can't really be argued that by individual position the QB is the most important. In my opinion.

Baltimore, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago have not gotten good value by the tons of cash they paid their QB's.  Would have been better served for at least 25% of their pay to have went to other players in my opinion.  Brees is crippling his team this year the same way.

Salary cap issues aren't the result of QB's making a lot of money.   Salary cap issues are a result of poor management by the GM.  See exhibit A,  the Carolina Panthers had salary cap issues because of the way the deals were structured.

A good GM's job is to mitigate those issues by planning ahead, structure contracts with the idea that the last 2 years are basically fluff, and signing good players early.  Doing a contract early is a risk and doing it too late is a risk.  Having forethought in team building helps keeping you from over paying.  Keeping the Kraken doesn't seem as desperate a situation because of Ealy's play.  Letting go of Dwill and keeping an oft injured Stewart doesn't seem so bad when you have Fozzy.

However the people who you have no alternative of replacing have to be compensated.  However you have to take a tiered approach and stay ahead of the game. Cam Newton , Luke Kuechly are givens.  Norman, Star, Short are people who should be extended before they hit their stride because the market for CB's and DT's is outrageous at the upper tiers.  If you can't get them signed early.  draft their replacements.

That's why I hope the Wilson, Luck deals get done early so the Cam deal can get done.  Knowing his numbers make figuring out the other numbers easier.  QB's are making between 18-22 Mill.  Thats the numbers on the new contracts, the market is set.   The closer to 18 and the farther from 22 makes it all work.

I think that Brady and Manning have each earned a ton of money in their respective careers. More money than you could spend in a life time for most people.

They've already had their biggest paydays.

I think they would rather take a pay cut for a chance to continue to bolster their legacy.

The only reason QB salaries are an issue is because the NFL is not raising the salary cap appropriately to offset this trend. Granted, I don't want the NFL to turn into the NBA where the players salaries are 50% of a teams expense, but there needs to be a balance.

Other guys on the team should not suffer bc the NFL has turned it into a QB league.

I would disagree about Baltimore and Atlanta. Flacco has been very good for them, consistently in the playoffs and winning playoff games. He's not their problem. Atlanta has many issues but I don't think QB is one of them.

But I do agree with Chicago and Detroit. Their inconsistencies can be partially blamed on their QBs. And an aging Brees is not a good look for the aints.

Bottom line though is you have a much harder road through the playoffs without that QB. I believe Cam is a franchise QB who can be considered top 5 elite. We have to pay him whatever he wants in my opinion. Like was said above, we can only hope he wants to win more than he wants a few million a year...but I won't begrudge him if he's the highest paid player next year.

Unfortunately guys are worth what someone is willing to pay them. So even if our GM balked at a huge number for Cam, some other team with lots of money to spend would back the brinks truck up for him so you kinda have to pay him the absurd going rate for young QB's.

    • They can’t reasonably fire a rookie head coach who was saddled with one of the worst first overall QBs of all time. And at times made said QB look decent to serviceable.  If the team was 3-11 at this point next season, fire everyone.
