Do we really need Rhys Lloyd?

Carolina is not a run and gun offense, obviously. Field position is of primary importance to us even more than it is to normal teams. Rhys Lloyd last year was THE best kicker in the league at making sure that the opposition didn't advance past the 20 yard line by virtue of his incredible TB%.

Those 10 or maybe 15 extra yards that a team would get per return if they were allowed the chance to return the ball may not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things, but if our defense is operating like they should be then more often than not our first possession is on our own 35 or 40 yard line if the opposition goes three and out. With that, it's just a few first downs away from points on the scoreboard.

The kickers and punters on this team are more important to our team than they are to just about any other team in the league because our success is a chess game of clock control and field position for 60 full minutes. When we win, we win small. When we lose, we lose small. No team in the NFL is as good at being "in the game" at the start of the 4th quarter than John Fox coached teams, for better or for worse.

His faith in the special teams unit and the kickers and punters explains the 3rd and 13 draw plays and the punting on 4th and inches at the 50. We give our defense the best opportunity to have success, and Rhys Lloyd is an irreplaceable part of that equation.

      I honestly didn't like trading up on the 2nd to draft a RB with a torn ACL. That didn't seem like a great move for this roster. But it wouldn't be a bad move if he proved to be a quality starter. But now signing Chuba to starter money on the hells of that? Yeah, that's significant roster building assets tied up in the RB position which has been a hallmark of the Panthers' roster building thought process over the years which has led to zero sustained success on the field.

      But it's not a plug and play like teams were thinking.  Ask the Cowboys and the Bears thinking they were fine letting Montgomery walk.  Ask the Texans who had to trade for Mixon because their backfield held them back.  @Bear Handsbroke down the top running teams in the league and they have a very similar allocated of money/investments in the RB room.  It's a $15 million guaranteed contract over 4 years.  IF we are paying him the full 32 then he is playing very well and earning 8 plus million a year over 4 years.  I don't think we are doing the starter/backup scenario.  Our OC even said he has plays featuring both backs in the backfield.  We are trying to be a RB committee with a RB room that isn't that expensive compared to the league average.  IF Chuba plays to his top potential and we pay out all money he will average between Stevenson and Swift's average salary.

      I'm just reporting it, not getting excited.  That will no doubt go down with new contracts. But because we've been drafting so many busts, there's no one in house to extend lol.  Could be spent on a lot of known resources.
