Eagles and Bills: Major Trade

So assuming this goes through...

You have an offensive coach trading away his best weapon for a young linebacker who tore his ACL last year.

And you have a defensive coach trading a potentially great young linebacker for an aging runningback.

I know there are loads of other factors to figure in, but any way you slice it this still comes off to me as an odd transaction.

Kiko's too small for the D that ryan traditionally runs and the eagles figure they can get 80% of mccoy's production out of 25% as much running back... and with that line, maybe they can.

gonna be interesting to see how it pans out.

Long term the Iggles just ripped off the Bills.

But if you look short term and the recipe Rex Ryan used to lead the Jets to 2 straight AFC Championship games this trade makes sense.

Thomas Jones and Ladanian Tomlinson ran point for the Jets Mark Sanchez led offense and an attacking defense to within one win of the Super Bowl.

Twice.

tomlinson was only the second time.  first time it was Jones, shonn greene and leon washington...

Wow..  Bills are f'n stupid.

Kiko looked amazing his rookie year..  dare I say.....he looked similar to Kuechly's rookie year?  If the injury doesn't affect him moving forward.......then he can easily be the 2nd best LBer in the league (After only Kuechly).

Paul Domowitch's article from January predicting the Eagles wouldn't keep McCoy because they couldn't afford both him and Maclin

"McCoy is only 26, but already has played six NFL seasons. His 1,461 carries rank ninth among active running backs. Most of the eight in front of him - Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew - are on the downside of their careers. While the run game is a key element of Kelly's offense, he, like a growing number of other NFL coaches, might feel he can find a younger, cheaper replacement(s) in the draft.

Take a look at the leading rushers for this year's 12 playoff teams. The Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch is the only back with a salary-cap number above $5 million ($8M). The leading rushers for nine of the 12 playoff teams had a cap number under $2 million. And this year's draft is supposed to be especially rich and deep in running backs."

and another article from March where he predicts it is not likely McCoy will be back:

"McCoy's 2015 cap number is $11.9 million, second highest among NFL running backs to Adrian Peterson ($15.4 million). Throw in Darren Sproles' $4.1 million cap number and have $16 million of the Eagles' 2015 salary cap (expected to be around $140 million) invested at running back. And that will increase even more once the Eagles tender restrict free agent Chris Polk. McCoy is only 26 and is one of the two or three best backs in the league. But he already has nearly 1,800 career touches. If his cap number were, say $5 million to $6 million, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. But it isn't. Chip Kelly has said he wants McCoy back, but at $11.9 million? Not likely."

I guess someone did after all. This season is going to be interesting...

Remember when Spurrier tried NFL coaching and his "system" and thought getting every Florida quarterback and receiver would be instant championships?

Good luck Chip, it's your funeral. And where's that douchebag Bills guy that's always stinking up the forum? Let's hear about it, broseph.

I think that the Eagles win this one in the long term. After factoring in the impact on the cap then they win in the short term too.

I think that everyone wins.  The Bills are going to get one of the best backs in the game at the better part of his prime, and the Eagle's get a quality LB.

As for the cap space: Sure the Eagles get some cap relief on the front end, but the cap always works itself out. The cap is not only a short term game, but a long term puzzle as well. It's dynamic, not static.  You really can't judge the success or failure of a trade based on the cap because circumstances for each team are different.  Some teams may be trying to win sooner rather than later, and some windows may be opening, while others are closing.  Sometimes spending is best, while other times you may want to pull back.  It's not like Buffalo will have to pay McCoy top dollar forever. If they do, that means he is producing at a very high level.
