Irt the internal combustion engine, its not politics.  Greed perhaps, but in reality the car companies would love to sell more electric cars.  People won't buy them, in part because of the cost, and in part because people that can afford to buy the higher price cars tend to be older and stick with what they are comfortable with.  Younger people might like alternative cars, but they can't usually afford them.  That is why imo the changes are occurring slower than many would prefer.

it's not the car companies...its the oil companies who keep posting record profits every quarter.  they've been stuffing renewable and alternative energy bills for decades.  that's why the technology has been slow to develop, and it took someone like Elon Musk to give them all a huge crotch grab and finally push it to the next level.

They can sometimes stuff bills, but they can't control the technologies the auto companies work on and market, especially given that the majority of auto companies are not in the US.  Congressional action is only a small part of the overall developement of new technology.
