Report: Andre Johnson will be released if Texans can’t find trade partner

Cobb is a pipe dream. It's not happening. People who think we WONT go after him bc we aren't "close to competing for a SB" must have forgotten we lost to the eventual NFC champion this past year.

Our biggest issue on offense is getting touchdowns inside the 25 and getting big plays. Johnson may be old but that dude can still get downfield and he can still win jump balls. I would RATHER have a guy like Parker, White, Cooper in the draft but there is no guarantee and we need more playmakers for Cam. Id sign AJ in a heartbeat for a cap friendly deal assuming it we could still address other needs.

I think DG would do it too IF we had the cap room. But we don't so it's prob not gonna happen but not for the reasons being thrown around here.

The question is not whether you want Cobb because everyone knows he would be very productive but do you want him at 12 million a year and who else could you get for that kind of money.  There are other guys who are cheaper and still will be productive.  It isnt that we arent competing for a Super bowl simply that we arent one player away or that Cobb will be the missing piece to winning s Super bowl.

As for Johnson, he may still be productive but at 34, he is a stop gap not a solution.  We need a guy who is productive and in his mid twenties, not one or 2 years away from retirement.

DG is building for the future and looking at being a winning franchise consistently.  That requires building around a young core not patching things together with expensive free agents.  We did that in the late 90s with poor results.  I dont want to go back to that failed strategy.  We are on the right path and honestly AJ is not part of the plan IMO.

From a weirdly big segment of people on the Huddle: Unless he's under 26, plays at a Pro Bowl level, would sign for near the minimum, and has no character issues at all...................................NO THANKS DO NOT WANT

And weirdly enough, last season they LOVED the signing of Cotchery and his pedestrian speed, while convincing themselves that he could replace Steve Smith production-wise, you know, because he did catch 10 tds with the Steelers... Lol.

Gettleman loves stopgap vets, if the price is right, I could see him coming in and helping while our WR draftees develop.

I heard him say that he actually doesnt like stop gap vets because it hurt consistency and chemistry when you have to turn over your roster every year.  He has had to resort to that given the cap hell we have been in, but I dont think it is the plan.  He wants a core of young players and to build through the draft.  Vets are important but I dont think they are seen as stop gap so much as part of the long term plan.  In 2013 we gave out a bunch of 1 year contracts.  In 2014 we gave out more 2 year deals.  I expect that trend to continue.  Even guys like Remmers last year were given a 2 year deal which now appears to be a fantastic move.

I dont think many folks loved Cotchery so much as they hoped he would be able to help.  I think those that thought he was going to replace Smith were hoping he would but I doubt they would have bet much money on it happening.  He was a cheap option little else.  Just about every expert in the summer was saying we had the worse wide receiver group in the league.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/five-potential-landing-spots-for-andre-johnson/ar-BBiazJn?ocid=U141DHP

This article suggests that Carolina is one of 5 landing spots for him.

How do they know? Psychic?  Inside information?  Or do they look at a list of needs and decide?

I am pretty sure it is the last one.

Isn't he about 34?

"Imagine Kelvin Benjamin and Andre Johnson lining up opposite one another with Cam Newton tossing them the rock. That’s the type of passing offense that could help Carolina take the next step towards conference championship contention. Right now, the Panthers are sorely lacking at receiver opposite Benjamin, who received 27 percent of Newton’s targets last season. It goes without saying that the young pass catcher will need someone to help him shoulder the load.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman dropped the ball big time in free agency last year. He simply cannot afford to do that again, especially with the team negotiating a long-term deal with its franchise quarterback. Adding Johnson would help Newton take the Panthers more seriously in said negotiations."

on any team!!!

would take him in Seattle in a heartbeat if the price was right.

I think he would be a great fit in Seattle.  They are winning now, he is aging, and I can see AJ and RW being on the same page--a lot.

Johnson is on the books to make 11 million in salary and roster bonus and his cap hit is 16 million.  Obviously Houston can't afford that so they are moving on.  Unless another team  has a ton of cap space that they have to spend, no one is going to trade for him.  If he is cut,  exactly how much of a discount do you expect him to take?  He will want to get paid at least 8 million or more.  He will also want a multi-year contract.

If I were going to spend 8 million on him I would spend 10 on Cobb who is much younger.   There are a ton of free agents who could be productive who you can get at a better price than either of them. Both Nicks and Crabtree would sign for much cheaper and they are both younger than Johnson.  Torrey Smith, Dwayne Harris and a slew of other guys could come in and make an impact and fit much better within our salary structure.

How the heck does that coach tell Andre that he won't be starting... Pure idiocy

Because they can't afford the 16 million cap hit and he wasn't going to renegotiate his salary.  I really doubt they were going to reduce his role and still pay him 12 million.
