To win the NFC South for a 3rd straight year? What 3 things?

Was arguing with a buddy yesterday about the 3 things that need to happen to keep us competitive for the next few years.

 

 

1: Extend Cam Newton, I'm not clamoring for him to be the highest paid QB in the game, but we do need him under center to remain competitive.

 

2:  Find the LT of the future.  I'm never big on FA signings, but I think this may be the best way to fix this issue.  Again, I don't want to overpay, but drafting at the back of the first round (hopefully) year in and year out usually doesn't produce those top tier LT's.

 

3:  Bolster the secondary.  I know we need speed at WR, I know we need new legs at RB and we will have a hole to fill with Hardy's absence.  We are committed to stopping the run, TD, Luke, Star, KK, and CJ are all great run stuffers, but we need to still get to the passer, and be able to defend the pass.

 

 

What 3 things are at the top of your list?  I have a few more that he and I were hashing out that I will share as well.

1. Find a LT

Hands down the most important. No matter who we get, Cam needs time to find an open receiver.

2. Get speed/route runner at wide receiver!

I don't care how much time you give Cam, if they can't get open.....he can't get them the ball.

3. Lastly, extend Newton

We have established why Newton is more important to this team than even Keuchly.....that should say enough.

Of course I believe there are more things needed to remain competitive, but we are being ridiculous if we believe the offense isn't where the majority of the work is needed. We do need to extend Keuchly, but we won't continue to be competitive if we can't score.

1)  Stay healthy, don't get stupid (Frank...), and build on last year's success

2)  Hope that none of our rivals get lucky in the draft/FA (i.e. the Falcons getting Hardy and Suh, and drafting the next OBJ).

3)  Get better at LT

 

Of the three, the most important is to stay healthy and on the field,  and build on our success last year.  We have a top defense if our guys are playing, and have a lot of reason to feel like we'll be even better with Frank Alexander in the rotation.  If you have a top 5 defense, you're always going to be in the mix.

 

I don't see any of the NFC South rivals seriously threatening this year.  Tampa Bay has a ton of talent but really needs leadership in the locker room, and it's been proven that it isn't coming from their current guys.  Even if Winston is for real, he's not going to be that vocal veteran leader his rookie year.  New Orleans is a train-wreck in the making on defense, and is too cap-strapped to make it better overnight.  And Atlanta also needs a talent infusion.  Of the three, I think Atlanta is the biggest threat because they have room to play in Free Agency and could get lucky there, finally.

 

And finally, our biggest weakness at the end of last year was LT.  We need another receiver, we would all love to see a strong safety with some freaking coverage ability, and having another talented CB would make us all the more devastating on defense.  But there's a difference in needing to improve and needing to plug a hole, and LT is a hole.  We fill that, we can make do everywhere else.

      I don't get the Hunter hate. Just imagine his ceiling if he stopped trying to be this 2way freak and focused on one side of the ball

      I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.  We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:  Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.  Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.  We need a physical option.    Which qualifies:  Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.  Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.  If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order: Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo. I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.
