Why dose everyone think that our D is gonna just click right off the bat. Every time a team installs a new scheme there is growing pains. Dont expect greatness untill every one understands what Meeks wants them to do. Really if you want to know thats why Fox tried to keep Trgo. Cause he knew there would be growing pains and he is trying to win NOW.

Because of two factors...One, the defense is usually ahead of the offense at this point in the season because the defense is easier to dictate and relies less on timing and rythm than the offense. And two, the "learning a new scheme" defense doesn't work. Green Bay switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and they are playing outstanding. Not saying they will play that way during the regular season but we aren't making such a drastic change as everyone seems to think. The point is that we aren't being coached very well and we have injuries, period.

He got burned big on that one long pass, but other than that, he was alone a lot due to failed blitzes. No cornerback is going to look good in that situation.

Yeah, yeah Mike Rucker reminded us enough that he was "playing on an island." If a CB is going to be paid elite money then they need to be able to handle guys one on one from time to time. Unfortunately, Gamble is a very average corner who played slightly above average in his contract year, and got paid way too much as a result.

You can't single out Gamble. Some of the burden is that of the defensive line and lack of a pass rush.

A terrible pass rush can make a perennial pro-bowler look like camp fodder.

The pass rush was actually decent. They hurried Flacco quite a few times. However, every time they blitzed it was a horrible failure.

I have been watching football for 30 years, and imo there isn't a single cornerback that can handle most nfl receivers one on one for more than three or four seconds. Thats why big blitz packages are a significant risk.

I was gonna make this thread myself after seeing him miss several tackles and then to top it off having KELLEY F*CKING WASHINGTON completely step around his press without trying, beating him, and catching a perfect throw from Flacco. That was inexcusable. I don't care if it is pre-season. It shouldn't happen.

And no one try to give me the "we're putting a new defense in..." Unless our new scheme dictates that our CBs whiff on a press and get burnt by scrub receivers, then I don't want to hear it. It should never happen... Not that easy, at least. CBs make mistakes, but that one tonight, just didn't sit well with me. And the Ravens even started to pick on him after several F-ups.

Gamble usually is a top-tier CB, and deserved the money when he got the extension, but that was the first thing I wondered watching him tonight... Was he worth it? Or was he REALLY still playing like before since he signed it? He's got to get it together. Would Champ Bailey get toasted by KELLEY F*CKING WASHINGTON?

I guess that's why you quit training camp early. For the money they make, Fox better fire them up.

PANIC !!!

Last few seasons Gamble and Panthers defense played 5-10 yards off the WR

This season they are learning to play up on the WR's

That's a change that will take some time to adjust and not all DB's will excell at it

Plus you have to have pressure from the front 7

I know this thread is about Gamble, but Marshall looked lost as well. It's the same Fox soft scheme they've used since the league changed the rules to outlaw hand checking. It's what made Luc look lost when he wasn't, it was the scheme. Teams seemed to really start catching on to what the Panthers are doing in the secondary, actually over all on D around the first Cardinals game last year.

Everyone knows just throw underneath 10 yard patterns are almost a guarantee. Then when the corners do step up run a go route, it'll be one on one because our safety's are stepped up behind the box to cover the middle because or LB's are blitzing.

It's the same all the time, either soft press, with no blitz or heavy press with a blitz, it's predicable as hell and easy to see it coming.

If Meeks has a scheme Fox needs to let him employ it, Tampa 2, man under, something different than the Fox soft press.
