Ravens willing to move on from Torrey Smith

To extend this speculative thought, it certainly MIGHT help confirm the fact that Steve Smith is tough on the other WRs on his roster.  (The reason NO WR who ever played here that was picked or signed after Smith was drafted ever amounted to much.  Smith, it is rumored, intentionally got in people's heads--saw teammates as "competition".  Again, devil's advocate.

That is possible but in that case he should be the one they get rid of. He only has another year in him.

To be fair LaFell wasn't awful and Muhammad came back after leaving for the Bears.

Adding a thought:

Look at the third round of the draft, where the 10th-15th WRs will likely be taken. Who are they (I include 9 because a few could go earlier)?

  • Josh Harper Fresno St
  • Justin Hardy, ECU
  • Tyler Lockett, Kansas St
  • Rashad Greene, FSU
  • Phillip Dorsett, Miami
  • Jamison Crowder, Duke
  • Tony Lippett, Mich St

After bad combine:

  • Sammie Coates, Auburn
  • Ty Montgomery, Stanford
Now consider the fact that the third round WR will make less than $1m.

There are a few names I would take over Smith without contract implications overshadowing the deal.

there are very, very few of those guys who are going to be good wide receivers. the draft is top heavy but not deep there. once you get out of round 2, youre not going to find much.

I think our fan base needs to wake up and realize the price of offensive talent now.  Look at what LaFell got paid, or even Ginn to sit on the bench.  That's just the price now.   Smith is the perfect compliment to KB.  He has flaws like anyone, but the combination of them should balance it out.   The same people who call Smith soft are probably loving Philly Brown who his injured on every long bomb and still a question mark.

I don't think 7 per is that terrible for his age.  I also think we should STILL draft a WR even if we sign someone like him.   This is how good teams do this, you keep loading up on talent.  When Smith's contract is about up, KB will be up and you can decide what you want to do.

Last year's WR class is clouding people's minds too.  Most of the time WRs do NOT have that kind of immediate impact.  Maybe that's the league now, but one year does not have enough data to say "let's just draft" because you may not end up with any immediate help.    We need people that can contribute NOW.

Obviously we'd want someone like Cobb, or Maclin but if it comes down to it, Smith is worth a look.
