Ravens willing to move on from Torrey Smith

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti expressed pessimism about retaining Torrey Smith two weeks before the start of free agency.

With the Ravens only having just over $5 million in cap space for the upcoming season, team owner Steve Bisciotti and general manager Ozzie Newsome face tough decisions regarding the teams’ top free agents, led by Torrey Smith.

While the Ravens would like to keep Smith, it appears Bisciotti is willing to move on from the 26-year-old.

"There's always a team that has lots of money that wants to bring in playmakers," Bisciotti said Tuesday at the "State of the Ravens" press conference. "Those guys are going to get those deals. I think we're going to have to take it on the chin and move on."

The Ravens reportedly offered Smith a five-year, $35 million offer with $19 million guaranteed, but he declined.

“I don’t like to stand up here and say I’m rooting against the guy [in getting a big payday], but we’ve got to find a number,” Bisciotti said. “And some of the numbers that are thrown out there, quite frankly, we can’t match."

This is the one guy I want and think is a must have. He's not going to cost "Tiffany's" prices. He is only 26 and the perfect complement to Benjamin. I really hope Gettleman feels the same way. It also saves us from drafting a WR. Can you imagine going into next year with Cam having

Kelvin Benjamin

Torrey Smith

Jerricho Cotchery

Philly Brown

Ted Ginn

Greg Olsen

Much Improved from last year and allows us to focus on o-line, d-line, and secondary in the draft.

Actually if we sign Torrey Smith I would assume cotchery would be a June 1 cut. Saves us 1.5 million.

The franchise tag in 2015 for a wide receiver is 12 million. You don't think Smith is worth more than 7. I think after the dumpster diving we have done the past 2 years people forget what it costs to get good talent in free agency. This is why you usually only get 1 or 2 premier guys in free agency and the rest are JAGs or older vets and developing players. But he and Benjamin would be quite the tandem for the next 5 or 6 years.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Torrey Smith. In my opinion he has shown a lot of inconsistency since he has entered the league and has trouble running routes. Sure, he makes a couple of big plays every now and then due to his speed and athleticism, but if you notice he usually scores off go routes. Seems too one dimensional and for that kind of money, not worth it. This is another crazy talented WR class in this years draft and I say we should go after one of them instead. Doesn't even have to be round 1. Can't deny there is a lot of upside to Smith though.

If he's wanting 7 or higher he can go to Jacksonville. I'm admittedly not a huge fan of him, but he very well may be our best and somewhat realistic option. 5-6 would be more like it though.

In cases like this, I'd rather pay 9-10 for Cobb and skimp at another position (draft/UDFA/vet min guy) than grab Torrey Smith at 7-8 and say, Roman Harper for 2-3 million.

Better value with Britt or Moore. Let someone else pay for the mostly one-trick Smith.

Is Moore a FA? Thought he had another year. Or are they going to cut him? I want Britt but I bet he re-signs with the Rams. He's a Fisher guy.
