David Newton: Panthers will NOT add Gurley or Gordon (unless they fall to the second)!

BPA is coach speak. Who is BPA for team A, team B, team C are all likely different. So BPA isn't BPA. It is team specific largely.

Cam was BPA for us in 2011.....bc of Carolina factors. Wasn't probably for most teams at 1....not even top 32 for some. Yes there are some examples of a glaring BPA....but overall BPA actually factors in many things.

BPA isn't just coach speak. There is a clear difference between the drafting for need and drafting BPA philosophies. And of course BPA is different for every team, it's OPINION. There's no set ranking of players that is regarded as universal fact.

I've watched virtually nothing of Gordon but Gurley is incredible. If he's there on board in the 2nd, then even I in all my disdain for high round RBs would be hard pressed to pass him up.

That said, it's only an outside shot he's there and this draft is deep with talented players at the position. You're going to see a plethora of NFL starters come off the board in the later rounds (rather than Kenjon Barners), and I figure we probably get one there.

Normally I'd agree, that it's coach speak, but listening to Gettleman's combine presser makes me doubt those thoughts.  At one point, he explained, "we're gonna draft the best guy, and if we have 5 stud guys at that position, and we're sitting there, and that position has the best guy, I'm taking him.  You can look at me like I got brain damage, but.... I'm gonna do it.  I'm just being honest guys."

That's BPA in the most literal sense I can imagine.  Maybe he's blowing smoke up people's asses, idk, but that's from the horse's mouth.

He says that at about the 3:45 mark.

I know. Every time that I referenced this in another thread, people didn't address it.  I just don't think that most people can wrap their mind around this concept---this hypothetical.  That's why I will be laughing my ass off the day that it happens.

    • And really, it should be 4 reasons with the last one being that there were ZERO other offensive weapons on that team in 2024, opposing defenses only had to worry about one player all year long and they constantly double and triple teamed him right off the snap all season.  In 2023, we still had Jacob Cowing who had 90 catches that year and was drafted by the 49ers last year, so teams couldn't just send everyone after T-Mac on every passing down.
    • I wonder if the Hornets view Kon and McNeeley more as forwards and plan to ship off Green/Okogie/Smith for center help. I hope they don’t plan to ship off Sexton as I like what he brings to the team. (2) G - Ball, Mann, Simpson (two-way) (3) G - Sexton, Dinwiddie, Connaughton (3) F - Miller, Knueppel, McNeeley, James (two-way) (3) F - Bridges, Williams, Salaun (3) C - Diabate, Kalkbrenner, Plumlee
    • 3 main reasons he was better in 2023 and none of them concern me for his NFL prospects 1. Totally new coaching staff that was a massive downgrade and had god awful play calling and designs, the entire fan base was ready to run the coaching staff out of town a month into their first season and the play caller ended up getting changed because it was so bad. 2. Along with the staff downgrade, his QB played significantly worse after being the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023.  Constantly missed T-Mac when he was wide open, lost out on a number of TDs and a good amount of yardage, half the time T-Mac still almost made miraculous catches on the bad passes too. 3. He hurt his ankle over the summer and missed all of fall camp only to return to practice a few days before the season started and I think he had to deal with it all season long and was slightly limping at times mid season too, but kept fighting through it to still be a 1st team All American.
