Roman Harper

Edmund Kugbila

 

Both guys are candidates to be released. Kugbila was a project coming out of the draft and hasn't even seen the field due to injuries. I don't see any reason to keep him around. Harper is going to be another year older and probably even slower. If we find a decent replacement in free agency I think he is gone.

 

Resign:

 

Looking at our list of free agents, I really don't see anyone worth resigning. Colin Cole and Dwan Edwards will be 33 and 34-years old. Ed Dickson isn't bad but he only had 10 catches last season. Blackburn is slow. Bell is garbage. Fozzy is a guy I'd like to bring back, but "we don't run the ball enough" so I don't know. Bersin should not be brought back but I have a feeling he will be.

Extensions:

 

Cam Newton - I think this will happen at some point during the offseason. It'll be a lot of money. Not going to try and guess.
Charles Johnson - CJ has been consistently solid for us. I think DG gives him a new deal to reward him, and as a result free up some cap.

Josh Norman - Obviously he looked great last season and I love the attitude he brings, but I'm still scared to give him long-term deal. 

Free Agency:

Joseph Barksdale, OT

Barksdale is a solid tackle who goes a bit under the radar. We are shopping at Target and he fits that value.

Torrey Smith, WR


Smith is a little higher value than "Target shopping" but I think DG will look into a couple of the higher rated WRs.

Ted Ginn Jr, WR/KR

Not much to brag about as a receiver but we definitely missed his KR/PR abilities.

 

Jabaal Sheard, DE

 

Solid player who saw his production drop when moved to OLB. Much better suited as 4-3 DE.

 

Da'Norris Searcy, SS

 

Keeping him on here from my previous mock. It's reported he will test the market. Perfect fit.

**These are all "bigger" signings. Additionally, we'd add some bargain-bin depth players at DT, LB, OL etc**

 

NFL Draft:

 

Round 1: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford (HT 6'7", WT 312)

Peat is a very large man with very light feet. He is built like the prototype LT with long large arms and tree trunks legs. When in pass protection, he can move really well when performing a kick slide. Can mirror pass rushers when they are running the arc, as well as when they are trying to counter their pass rushing moves, or go inside once committing outside. Has the shown the ability to recover from getting beat, and ride DL outside to help form a pocket. Large butt and legs help him anchor when facing a bull rush. As a run blocker he can reach block, down block, arc block, and move his defenders with ease. Peat moves really well to the second level, and blocks linebackers with ease. Would fit perfectly into the Panther’s offense. Has experience with playing in a power running scheme, 3-7 step drops in the passing game, zone read, and play action plays.

Round 2: Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest (HT 6'0", WT 188)


Johnson is very quick, light on his feet and has fluid hips. Has great transition and recovery speed. He flashes good read and react skills, but is a bit inconsistent in his route recognition. Can excel if he can bulk up while maintaining his speed and agility.

Round 3: Nick O'Leary, TE, Florida State (HT 6'3", WT 252)

O'Leary has the size to be a good blocker and stay up strong to catch a pass when he's being covered. Has a quick off-the-snap run with such great hands that he doesn't even wear gloves. Needs to work on blocking bigger defenders.

Round 4: David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa (HT 6'1", WT 224)

My favorite player in the draft. He can do it all. Patient runner with great field vision. He can catch out of the backfield and impressive route-runner. Excellent pass blocker. Experience as PR/KR. By all accounts, he's a hard worker and a good teammate. Flashed impressively patient running, particularly at the Senior Bowl. He had an unbelievable combine which might bump him up to a 3rd round pick.

Round 5: Antwan Goodley, WR, Baylor (HT 5'10", WT 209)

 

Like other recent Baylor wideouts, Goodley is a nightmare on the outside. Also has experience in the slot. He doesn’t have great straight-line speed, but does a solid job finding the ball over his shoulder. Great YAC ability. Physical runner with the ball.

Round 5 (comp pick): Deion Barnes, DE, Penn State (HT 6'4", WT 240)

 

Great size and frame for his position. Quick off the line and shows ability to get underneath blocker and hit the inside gap. Decent athletic ability but is able to cover a lot of ground with his large frame. Needs to add strength.

 

Round 6: Leterrius Walton, DT, Central Michigan (HT 6'5", WT 319)

 

Great combo of size strength and some speed, but as a converted offensive lineman, doesn’t yet have the honed skills as a defender. Walton has shown flashes of potential, but he’s a project player that has the measurables to succeed in the NFL.

Round 7: AJ Tarpley, LB, Stanford HT 6'2", WT 241)

 

Not the greatest athlete but is a smart player. Reliable tackler. Great instincts. Decent coverage skills to build on.

Not a big fan because I would really want a receiver early in this great draft class. However, overall it is a good job.

I don't think we have enough money for all of those signings though.

I love the WRs in this class too, but I think we are in a weird spot in the first and second for that position.

So, I switched him out for Sheard who should be much cheaper.

Love the 1st, 4th, and 5th. I'm a o learn fan, but not til the 4th... but if the I knew the whole draft, it may not be a problem. This is one of best mocks/of season thinglely I've seen so far.

I've made my dislike for drafting RB, but form a value standpoint I loooooove david johnson. The other RB I love is that boise state guy aiyai(sp), I see no problem picking either in the mid - rounds. All others id avoid at all cost value/cost, theyre too rich for me.

Interesting take on the draft.  As mentioned earlier you did not take a receiver early.  Liked the picks though.  Question Torrey Smith being a pickup but this would definitely upgrade the team.

I like your FA and different take in the draft. 

 

As this scenario shows, if we're not in a place to take a WR in the first 2 rounds, a potential good move could be to go after a potential #2 in the FA.  A Smith could be worth it and we're still carving out some dough.

The draft comes after FA. In my FA we sign T Smith and Ginn. WR is no longer a huge need in that scenario.
