Here's my definition of good. Name more than 10 active coaches that could've done a better job with this roster.

Why argue about hypothetical scenarios when we can see what is right in front of us?

If Clifford a "bad" coach? No.

Is he a "great" coach? That's certainly debatable.

Does he need to improve? Yes. Does our FO need to improve? Yes.

Seems pretty simple.

You mean that terrible stretch of games where we were missing two of our three best players.

Even when those guys were healthy, namely Kemba, we were still pissing away games in the 4th quarter.

Look, I get it, you like Clifford. That's cool. Some of us want a little better than just barely mediocre enough to compete though.

TheRed is pretty much on point.  Clifford isn't bad and probably will get better.  But it is a combined effort of him, the FO, and the players that are problem.  Clifford has "game-time coaching" issues with things like rotations.  His blind loyalty to vets over young guys that can light a fire in a game is a problem.  How many time has Hairston came in, heated up, and was taken out immediately?  I've seen him come in, nail a three and play some good defense, and get pulled out for someone like Neal or something.   I've seen him put Maxiel in over Biz (early season).  He does a lot of things that makes no sense.  His uncanny ability to lose 4th quarter leads is troubling.

Did the FO fail at getting good wings and overpay Marvin Williams?  Totally.  Are the players underperforming?  For sure.  Lance is a disaster and Al has reverted to black hole status.

The problem is this city is OK with mediocrity.  Look at the Panthers last two coaches, Fox/Rivera.  Clear evidence.  Getting outcoached is getting really old in this city.

There is sadly a lot of truth to this.

Rivera has had that light come on, the guy just won't stay consistent. He reverts back to his old ways. It's baffling.

With Clifford, he just needs to put the ego aside a bit. Let these young guys get some minutes. They're going to make mistakes, growing pains are going to happen. But our team will be better for it in the long run. Riding the bench isn't helping them.

I think guys are just starting to go through the motions now. We saw an new energy in the team early on. We need that again.

Like I said, I'm more than willing to give Clifford another season. We need to retool the roster a bit and move on from Lance. Hopefully with a solid addition from the draft and some depth in other areas we should be in a good enough position.

But what we cannot continue to see is our head coach standing around on the sidelines scratching his head while we lose games at the end in the same frustrating and pathetic fashion over and over again. Figure out the roster and stick with it.

Well you were the one arguing about hypothetical scenarios, but nice deflection. I've already stated in this thread he needs to improve. I just find it asinine to fire the best coach in our franchises history because our roster is trash.

If I'm going to criticize Cliff when he makes mistakes, gotta give him credit for what he did tonight with that starting lineup.

Hollins knew from the Boston game that we struggled with small lineups, so he goes small with Williams-Brown-Anderson-Johnson- Plumlee hoping to exploit Cody's weakness as a perimeter defender and stretching the floor.

Seeing this, Cliff counters with Marvin as the SF defensively leaving MKG as the Joe Johnson specialist, and putting Cody on the bench, a move that fans including myself have panned often. It worked to perfection: MKG completely took Joe out of the game, Marvin caught fire from three and put that game out of reach before it even started, and Cody played with a chip on his shoulder and some aggressiveness and filled the role of an energy big nicely.

  • 3 weeks later...

So it seems Tom Thibodeau will likely be out of Chicago after this season. Would you fire Clifford if it meant getting Thibs in return?

I'd post a YouTube video of my fat ass doing backflips and cartwheels if i thought it would help get that deal done. Far better coach than Clifford and will work with ALL of his players and not just the elder statesmen.
