As a fan, it's easy for us to say fire him, and in all honesty, he deserves it. But, the reality is, we can't fire him regardless of whether we should or not. Due to our poor mismanagement of previous coaches, we have to keep him for awhile and show some stability, otherwise, we won't be able to hire a head coach worth a crap ever again.

I kind of want him gone.  I think mainly because I'm still shellshocked from guys like Fox, Rivera, Larry Brown, etc that continue to play aging vets that aren't getting it done.  Like Fox/Rivera, I don't think Cliff is a good "game coach".  Good coaches during practice and all that but once the game starts, pretty bad.  I'm tired of our Hornets (Cats) giving up 20 point leads and watching vets steal minutes from the young guys.

Only if we are convinced that we will get someone better.

This is a great point so I'd also add that to my vote.  I wouldn't be on board with letting Cliff go to sign someone like Mike Dunlap lol.

Do you guys think Ewing is ready to take on the reigns though?

You guys amaze me.

Cliff has been without his starting point guard, and mostly his best wing defender (and teams best player), and the rim protecting center for several weeks.

This roster is super flawed, and he has somehow got us into the playoffs and in the playoff chase this year, while working with mostly poo.  Granted, it is the East, but still.

We have never had a better coach than this.  We will continue to be the leagues laughing stock if we fire Cliff.

No offense, do you watch the games?

He has terrible rotations and keeps the wrong players in the game.  He kept Neal in despite bricking everything all the way up until he was traded.   He blindly keeps vets in there that aren't performing.  Don't get me wrong, he is FAR from a bad coach and like someone said, only if we could get someone better (which is probably not going to happen).  Even when we were healthy or only had a person out we had some questionable rotations and lots of blown leads.

In his defense, no one expected Lance to be the worst player on the team either, so his whole gameplan was screwed up, that and Al just not caring at all.

I never said he was perfect.  Of course he isn't, but I mean it is easy to sit back and say.  We are missing shots!  His rotations suck!

Cliff has to manage careers, egos,  and other long term issues.  Would he sacrifice a December win in order to make a player better in the long run?  I am not saying that is what he is thinking, but it is much more complex than just looking at it from a game-to-game basis.

Look I agree, I wished we could see more Vonleh and PJ, but I trust Cliff on why those guys are not getting the minutes right now.

No coach in the league would have this bunch with these injuries in the top 5 of the east.

I think several people ITT think this is college basketball. It is not. The coaching is different. The Hornets were not expected to be a top-5 team in the East even if everything went well.

Actually, that is not true.  Lots of "experts" were placing the Hornets in top 4 status in the East after the Lance signing.   We were most definitely expected to be a top team.

He has a lot of flaws, but no way we should fire him. He's the best coach this franchise has ever had (Larry Brown wasn't that good here). Does he have flaws, yes very bad ones actually. But he's at worst an average coach. If we're not getting a top tier guy like Carlisle, Thibs, Pop, etc. there is no reason to fire him. It would be firing a flawed coach for a possibly more flawed coach.

At the very least he gets the team to buy into playing hard for him. That alone is a commendable skill, and it's also just his second season as a head coach. Definitely give him more time, there's no reason to downgrade at coach.

    • Exactly the type of thing he would have done here. The excuse people were stannin’ so hard claiming he would have looked just as bad. Just not true.
    • Yes and there aren't 32 starting QBs in the league either. Too many teams and too many games. The NFL has regressed over the years and game quality is lacking. The other leagues are supposed to be farm leagues but it doesn't matter. You just won't have 32 no matter what they do. The move to super athletes playing QB at all levels has lead to this. It used to be those guys played other positions but now they are QBs who can't really QB.  It has a trickle down effect too. OL can't block because they never had to. The fact that in today's game your QB must be able to run at least a little to survive is evidence of this as well. IMO they have ruined the game same as with the NBA. It's been simplified to the point of being boring.  Just look at the top 10 this season. Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) Joe Burrow (Bengals) Josh Allen (Bills) Lamar Jackson (Ravens) Dak Prescott (Cowboys) Jalen Hurts (Eagles) Brock Purdy (49ers) Jordan Love (Packers) Justin Herbert (Chargers) Matthew Stafford (Rams) Once we get to number 5 the stats look like this: 167 262 1,845 63.7 7.0 10 8 65 18 84.5   47.5   10 TDs and 8 INTs??? At number 5??? There was a time not that long ago that he wouldn't even be a starter.
    • I'm not convinced that the NFL is any better or worse at developing QBs now than they were 20 years ago.  I mean I'm sure there are some developmental issues at play, just not sure it is any different than it has been. The biggest difference IMO is that NFL teams are waaaaaaaay more willing to invest a 1st round pick into a QB now than they were 15-20 years ago.  A guy like Colin Kaepernick would probably be a top 5 pick in 2025, whereas he went in the 2nd in 2011.  Would a guy like Trey Lance go top 3 in 2010?  Hell no.  Look at Russell Wilson - he didn't go until the 3rd round.  The standard for being a 1st round QB has dropped. So it may seem like we're seeing more high-profile busts at the position, but we're also seeing teams reach for QBs way more than they have in the past.  Someone with Anthony Richardson's college resume doesn't go in the top 3 20 years ago.
