Mattress talk - time to get serial

So any pointers on what to look for in a latex mattress?

That is a hard question to answer.  Buying a mattress is hard.  Even for someone like me who sold mattresses for a period of time, it is hard to know what manufacturers are legit and which ones are selling you poo.

And they make it purposely hard and there are 1,000s and 1,000s of bed manufacturers in the US, which makes it frustrating

Just make sure to try and check the specs if they are available (coil size, amount of foam, etc)

It may take you out of your price range, but I tend to steer people toward known major brands like Sealy, SImmons, and Tempurpedic.  You may not be able to afford their 100% foam beds, but they have great coil mattresses that are more affordable.

If you stray to some of these lesser known manufacturers just try to do some research on the company.  Some of them are actually really good (one that I liked was Carolina Mattress Guild, but even they weren't as well put together as Sealy or SImmons)

Just take your time.  Lay on the beds if you go to a mattress store.  Find one that you find really comfortable and fits your price range.  It all basically comes down to personal preference and comfort.  You will find something

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't California King mean it's longer but narrower?

definitely longer....I don't think it's narrower though...mine sure doesn't seem to be unless it's something different again.

at 6'7 I can damn near lay across it side to side....can stretch right out length wise

California King: Width 72 inches, Length 84 inches

King:                 Width 76 inches,  Length  80 inches

California is 4 inches longer and King is 4 inches wider.

So for tall SOB's the Califronia would be the way to go.

so...I recently bought a sleep number bed, and will give a review after I've slept on it for 5 years.  while I agree it's basically a glorified aerobed, the flexibility it offers really makes it the only viable option.

Being able to choose your own firmness is a key to a happy relationship.  When the lights go out, it's all about sleeping and that means what's comfortable for you.  In all my years of manwhoring, I've never found anyone who likes the same bed firmness as I do.  Being able to customize the firmness on both sides is extremely valuable.

I've been sleeping at a slight incline for the past few years.  This helps immensely with breathing through the night.  building a platform with a bunch of pillows is functional but inconsistent.  I got an adjustable frame, which can even be split for a different angle on each side.  Again, flexibility to sleep the way you want to sleep, and still allow your partner to sleep the way they want to sleep.

I also included the SleepIQ, which seems like a first gen smart bed kind of thing.  Watching sleep data live is completely useless...because I'd be asleep...but, seeing a min by min chart of sleep patterns can really be helpful.  Putting real data behind what firmness and incline will make me sleep better can do a helluva lot more than me saying, "well, that feels good."  Again, this is still just first gen smart bed, but it's a start.

So, the flexibility of bed firmness and position, along with the sleepIQ help to separate sleepnumber from any other mattress.  I'll get it in another week or so, and will come give more info on my thoughts after a month or so.
