Mattress talk - time to get serial

Cary Kollins

Recommended Posts

I'm moving into a new home and with that will finally be upgrading to a King size bed.

This is my first mattress purchase...I've been using the same queen mattress since college. Ahh. Memories.

So for the seasoned Mattress Purchasers, tell me your experiences and any recommendations you have. I'm looking for something less than $1500.

I've found "Bed in a Box" and I'm leaning towards their $799 king.  The memory foam is produced in Mt. Airy which is pretty cool.

I used to sell mattresses. Did it for 5 years.

I have a latex foam mattress from Sealy. It has same benefits as a memory foam mattress but has a different feel that is more in line with a traditional mattress, and is more breathable.

They last forever (not literally) and are comfortable as poo.

Don't get fooled by someone saying they use memory foam or "space" foam. There are different grades of that stuff and some of then are not great beds.

Also, don't get caught up in coil counts. There are also different thicknesses of coil, so a bed manufacturer might say they have 1,000 coils but their coils are so thin and weak they fall apart and don't actually give you as good support. For example Stearns and Foster has lower coil count than other mattresses but are thick and durable. They will actually give you better support and last longer.

Lastly, if you do get a memory foam bed, you don't need expensive box springs. You just need a solid foundation. box springs are designed to help the longevity of the springs in a coil mattress. If you get a foam mattress they just come with a foundation which is just basically a solid box with stiching for aesthetic purposes.

Because of that, you may be able to mix match with a cheaper foundation to save a few bucks (especially if you get an expensive foam mattress set like Tempurpedic) or if you have a platform bed, you wouldn't really need one at all.

If you get a coil mattress however, I recommend getting the box springs designed for that mattress. They are designed for their mattresses to make them last longer. Some cheaper coil mattresses also use simole foundations. You want to steer clear of those if at all possible, unless it is a Simmons

Edit to add: I never sold Sleep Number beds but I have heard good things from customers outside of occasional complaints about motor noise

Thanks for the insight.

I see that BedInABox.com sells a King foundation for $399.

Interested in this thread since I am in the market as well. So if I were to buy a queen size latex similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/LUCID-Inch-Latex-Foam-Mattress/dp/B0099X7W0U/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1424712152&sr=8-6&keywords=latex+mattress#customerReviews

Could I use an existing box spring that I had for my coil mattress or do I have to get a new one.

For convenience, I want to order a bed in a box and just have it shipped to me but I'd hate to order without trying it one and hate it.

I see that BedInABox.com sells a King foundation for $399.

A king foundation is just two twin XL (means extra long) foundations. Call some local mattress stores and inquire about twin XL foundations. You might be able to find some that are for cheaper brands of coil mattresses for around $100 each (possibly less). That could save you $200

I have no idea the quality of bed in a box. Send me the link, and if there are other questions you have just ask. I may be a little rusty but will try to help. :)

I got a Sleep Number in grad school when I started to have back problems and it came recommended by my spine doc. Yes, they have a way of promoting a well-aligned spine but there are limitations. I wouldn't recommend it. The Sleep Number bed is nothing more than a glorified air mattress. Some come with one air chamber, others with two chambers so that two people can have two different settings. If you sleep alone and you get a one chamber bed, then it can be great. But if you have others in the bed with you, a single chamber will not work. Whoever weighs the most will weigh down that side and the other person will be left sleeping on what feels like an over-inflated air mattress. The alternative if you have two people is, obviously, to get a dual chamber bed. But the dual chambers have a piece of foam that separates the two air chambers and it can become real annoying if/when you are in the middle of the bed (bow chicka bow). That's my two pennies.

Get a foundation. Not a box spring. Don't use old one

I have heard this as well. Also some complain that it lowers sleeping space because air chamber doesn't reach edges of bed. That is mostly an issue for couples as well

That is for comfort only. Won't really help with the conforming aspect of a true foam bed that gives better support and less pressure on body.

But if issue is simply comfort that is a great idea

Yeah my parents got a full novaform mattress and it was too soft for the likes of me.

With some of these foam mattresses you can get different firmness options. Typically you have firm, plush, and pillow top. Especially with latex foam.

Memory foam can even do it. Tempurpedic has different firmness as well. But most manufactures just throw one memory foam mattress for all. Sometimes they are way too soft. Especially if they are using cheap memory foam

So any pointers on what to look for in a latex mattress?
