Panthers and Cam Newton in contract talks

I'm not so sure I buy that.

The teams that have followed the formula of 'pay a few guys big and skimp everywhere else' have yet to see any Super Bowl victories. And this includes the teams that switched to that model after having won one.

I agree with Cam and Luke getting paid fair contracts, but if we're going to tie huge amounts of cap into just a few guys, what are we doing any differently than Marty Hurney?

The difference is Cam by any objective measure could be the GOAT and Luke the best MLB of a generation.

Do any of you know about "Carolina Panthers Fever" (sportsblog)?? I'm not trying to promote them I'm just trying to find out if they are fake news or actually report real information?

They reported some of the same stuff as here, but today they "reported" (inside info) that I'd be worried to say here. ANYONE that can clear this up for me would be appreciated. Thanks

Go with your gut....

if there was really a source with that story it'd be getting picked up nationally and not on some backwater sports blog

I'd give up millions to form a complete team and to win a super bowl yes.

Cam already "gave up millions" because of the rookie salary cap.

The fact that the team was fuged because of Hurney during that time and had no money to spend to "fix" things that they need to fix now is no fault of Cam's.  In fact, his play has COVERED up so many of those past mistakes it ain't even funny.

Yet the big Humanitarian Dex thinks he should, yet again, "give up millions".

How easy it is when its not your own money, right Dex?  Throwing around Monopoly money was always THE BEST!

Did you pay your $1?

1. The cap is jumping, and will continue to jump. Say by 2020, it very well could be up 15-20 million (if not more) than what it is now.

2. EVERY franchise QB in the league from here out, will be making 20 million plus. They used to make a million, then someone out did someone and it became 5, then 7, then 10...you get the picture. Same thing is playing out here. 5 years from now, QBs going rates very well may be 25-30, not 20-25.

3. Cam is getting paid, and frankly if he doesn't, we're fuged (for a few years at least). Unless you're cool with hitting the jackpot again in the draft (not likely), or signing a Jay Cutler type guy for 18-20 million instead of Cam at 23-25. I'm not. Pay the man.

There's a reason why Dex and his ilk don't want Cam to get his market value.

And that reason has nothing to do with the good of the team.  We all know that.

You do realize that the "salary cap will increase big in the next few years" is exactly the philosophy that Hurney used and that has bitten us in the ass now for years.

And he wasn't wrong per se about it jumping...he just spent money in the wrong places, obviously.

The salary cap by year...with it expected to hit 138-140 this year. Basically, 15-20 million every 4-5 years, and record TV deals continuing to flow in to increase it.  Obviously things can change...but using some quick estimations based on the past, the cap "should" trend to 150-160 million in 4 years. Not to mention as already pointed out, franchise QBs will be making 20-25 across the league at that point, if they aren't already in many cases.

2014 $133 million

2013 $123 million

2012 $120.6 million

2011 $120 million

2010 Uncapped

2009 $123 million

2008 $116 million

2007 $109 million

2006 $102 million

2005 $85.5 million

2004 $80.582 million

2003 $75.007 million

2002 $71.101 million

2001 $67.405 million

2000 $62.172 million

1999 $57.288 million

1998 $52.388 million

1997 $41.454 million

1996 $40.753 million

1995 $37.1 million

1994 $34.608 million
