Panthers met with Miami OT Ereck Flowers

I think RT is the ceiling on Flowers

Don't think his footwork is good enough for the left side.

I picture Bell

He moves a helluva lot better than Bell could ever dream of doing.  Sure, Flowers needs to clean up his footwork, but his agility tests were all very good for an OT.  The difference between him and Bell is that Flowers has the athletic ability to improve, Bell doesn't.  He could be a flawless technician and he's still going to get beat like a drum by good edge rushers.  He just can't move those feet fast enough.

Lions blog:

"what other tackle(s) might the Lions consider with the No. 23 pick in the draft? Well, one name they should strongly consider is Miami (FL)'s Ereck Flowers.

...

He was a three-year starter for the Hurricanes (one year at right tackle, two at left) ... exceptional run blocker who has his ups and downs in pass protection. ... if you focus on Flowers (No. 74), you'll see how he's able to completely erase a defender from a developing run. What makes Flowers stand out among his counterparts is how technically sound he is in the run game. ... He's extremely light on his feet and displays great footwork ... Flowers may be the best second-level blocker in this class. Here is another beautiful example ... has great awareness and was forced to regularly diagnose and pick up stunts. ... Here's a nice example of Flowers anchoring and controlling second-round talent Mario Edwards Jr. with ease. ... will get caught off balance too often. ... when matching up against another top edge rusher in Virginia's Eli Harold, they traded shots throughout the game, but Harold ultimately got the better of him. ... Ereck Flowers is a great talent with plenty of upside. He is an exceptional run blocker who tends to struggle in pass protection ... If he's available for the Lions in the first round, it's more than likely that he'll be strongly considered ... Flowers is raw, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was able to win a starting job immediately. If he's unable to beat LaAdrian Waddle for the starting right tackle job, I could definitely see him moving inside and holding down the starting left guard spot while also serving as a swing tackle."

Giants blog:

"The New York Giants have the 9th overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft ... Ereck Flowers merits some consideration, as a really intriguing left tackle prospect. ... There is no doubt that Flowers has the physical tools to succeed at the next level.

Flowers is possibly the best run blocking left tackle in this draft class. He does a great job at staying on his block, getting to the second level of the defense and plowing linebackers out of his ball carrier’s way.

Flowers will be instrumental in his NFL team’s screen game, as he has the athleticism and the acceleration to make blocks off the edge. His ability to run block is what makes him stand out amongst other left tackle candidates.

A left tackle however is charged with protecting the quarterback’s blind side. In this task, Flowers is surely no slouch. He has great footwork, which allows him to kick out quick edge rushers and to stay balanced against bruising bull rushers.

...

He could develop into a consistent offensive tackle ... Flowers is a very solid prospect. Last season, Taylor Lewan from Michigan flew up the draft boards after he showed great ability at the NFL Combine. Lewan was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 11th overall pick. Flowers could be this year’s Lewan. Flowers is certainly somebody to keep an eye on.

another Giants blog on Flowers:

"Tremendous footwork. Light on his feet. ... He definitely has the requisite footwork to become a ZBS blocker in the pros and he is intelligent enough to know when to peel off blocks and when to go help his partner next to him. I think he could possibly be a right tackle, but given his propensity to get bulled backwards, I think he should stay on the left side. He's had some lapses against speed rushers, but he's got the athleticism and work ethic to be a left tackle ... I'm not sure he'll be a starter right away. He's one of the few true left tackle prospects but could easily line up on the right side. His balance issues and strength are really frustrating to watch on film, but watching him move around effortlessly is almost breathtaking. A super high-end developmental player for me, he's worthy of a first-round pick, but you have to have a contingency in place."

Edraft.com is very high on him:

"Ereck Flowers is an excellent athlete and it translates easily to the field. ... He stays balanced throughout his kick slide and is able to reset his stance if gets knocked back. He’s very good when moving downfield, showing great awareness and movement skills....he is very impressive in space. His ability to reach the second level on run plays is a major asset because he can act as the lead blocker. His lower body could use more functional strength ... An NFL weight program should be able to easily help him improve. ... Considering his length and strength, Flowers can be a shut down left tackle, and he was for most of 2014. His ability to lock out defenders with his powerful hands and long arms is easily translatable to the NFL. ... Flowers is a pretty refined technician entering the NFL. His kick slide is very smooth, and he’s able to counter inside moves effectively with his balance. The best part of his technique is that he lands his punches with great placement. ... Randy Gregory somewhat exposed his ability to handle power, but Flowers won more than his fair share in that battle as well....Against top competition, Flowers played well. His matchup against Randy Gregory showed that he can recover from great burst off the edge, and also handle elite power moves decently. Flowers can handle power better, however, by keeping his hands more active and re-directing the rusher."

NFL.com Chris Trapasso @ ChrisTrapasso Feb 11

Ereck Flowers mini scouting report: Uses arm length well.

Great feet for 6'6", 330. More refined as pass blocker > run

blocker. Ju'Wuan like

here is a 2nd Ju'Wuan comparison...

LastWordOnSports.com's detailed scouting report concludes that Flowers is a 2nd Rounder: "Flowers is best suited for the right side in the NFL. Is reminiscent of Dolphins first round pick Ju’Wuan James, though not likely to be drafted as high as the former Tennessee standout. Comparison: JuWuan James"

http://lastwordonsports.com/2015/01/21/2015-nfl-draft-ereck-flowers-scouting-report/

as a rookie at age 22, Ju’Wuan James (who played RT in college) started all 16 games, first at RT, then moved to LT...

Dolphins' website:

"What Ja’Wuan James is doing as a rookie for the Miami Dolphins really is pretty remarkable. It’s one thing that he’s been rock solid all season while starting every single game at tackle, but then you add the fact he was asked to switch from the right side to the all-important left side midway through the season and it’s even more impressive."

and people critcized Miami for taking him so high. Fox example:

"I was shocked when it happened and I remain shocked more than two weeks later," wrote NFL.com college football writer Mike Huguenin. "I don't think the guy was one of the top eight offensive tackles and am flabbergasted Miami felt the need to take him in the first round. He's a right tackle who can struggle when blocking for the run. What am I missing?"

Browns blog:

"Flowers projects as 1st-2nd Round... It would be a huge win if the Browns could land him in the 2nd round...Browns RT Mitchell Schwartz is a serviceable player but would be better suited to slide to the left and occupy the guard position if the Browns choose to select Flowers. ... Flowers could be the long term replacement for Joe Thomas at left tackle ... Flowers fits perfectly for the Browns. He shows great quickness and balance getting to the second level when performing run blocking...Flowers is a technical player with good height and length, he looks the part"
