Panthers met with Miami OT Ereck Flowers

Stephen White (a DE that played in the NFL from 1996-2002) finished his film study of Flowers, the 2nd OL he has studied after La'el Collins (he loved Collins at LT and said he'd go top half of the first round)

The whole thing is a good read, but his conclusion on Flowers was:

"Moving Flowers to guard is a viable plan if a team isn't comfortable throwing him out there at tackle the first few years ... or ever.

...

Because I can see that potential in him to play well at guard, I would feel comfortable picking him in the second half of the first round of the draft if he hasn't had weight issues. Probably closer to the bottom, but if you are picking 20th and you need a left tackle, you might have to go ahead and take him there instead of waiting because ... you're picking 20th, duh.

...

Without weight issues, Flowers is a guy who still isn't a sure thing because of technique issues, but who could be really good if he corrects those issues [awful footwork, a bad kick step, doesn’t line up properly, slow reaction to the snap, plays too high, poor pad level...most of this is readily correctable...but there are no guarantees]

...

Again, all bets are off with any weight issues. Second round at best in that case. Probably lower, because all teams will have the same info and nothing scares teams away from an offensive lineman more, than a dude with weight issues. Which means he could fall even further if nobody is willing to bet on him."

MMQB/Peter King decided to do a mock draft to "put to use some things he heard last week at the league meetings." He says he won't be doing another mock until a few days before the Draft.

The OL in his 1st R:

#9 Scherff - "is the best offensive lineman on everyone’s board"

#12 DJ Humphries - "the second-best tackle prospect on many boards."

#17 Andrus Peat

#23 Cameron Erving - “Second-best offensive lineman in the draft, to Scherff,” was the word in Phoenix from one GM

#25 Ereck Flowers - "The Panthers have a few needs, but the one at tackle cries out for an instant fix."

#28 La'el Collins - "Good value for the spot"

#29 TJ Clemmings

Charlotte Observer yesterday:

"Flowers continues to puzzle. He has the strength and athleticism to succeed at left tackle in the NFL, but his technique lags behind other first-round prospects. ... with no long-term answer at offensive tackle on the Panthers’ roster, he could be the pick at No. 25 for Carolina. ... The Panthers liked him enough to send offensive line coach John Matsko to the Miami area on March 20 to have dinner with Flowers and work him out. And one team source indicated “it’d be close” when asked if Flowers, 21, could fall to the Panthers at No. 25. ... Because of his technique issues, Flowers would likely begin his NFL career at right tackle as a team teaches him how to play left."

Charlie Campbell today:

"Sources say the Panthers are very interested in Flowers, who pick at 25.

...

Sources say the Jets were grading Flowers in the mid-teens but may have moved him up in recent weeks after the Combine and pro day.

...

A general manager from a playoff team told me they have Flowers in the top 20 on their draft board.

...

Flowers had pre-draft visits to the Buccaneers and Panthers, and he has visits scheduled with the Jets, Rams, Browns and Colts

...

Sources say there are other teams that are bringing in Flowers for pre-draft visits, but they are keeping that confidential. Flowers also has had meetings and private workouts for the Saints, Falcons and Chargers"

Rotoworld's draft expert Josh Norris mocked Flowers to the Panthers at #25 yesterday:

"Round 1 (25): T Ereck Flowers , Miami - I mock this selection with gritted teeth. As Evan said, Oher and Martin are nothing more than adequate talents at best. I do not view them as upgrades. Flowers has power due to strength and frame… but I just don’t love him at this selection. However, I am not naive. I know teams and evaluators will disagree with me. Flowers is so all over the place with his movement, and it leads to balance issues. Development is needed."

Peter Schrager raving about Flowers yesterday saying "everybody is raving about Dorsett...forget Dorsett...the Miami guy to watch is Flowers...he is being overlooked because he doesn't have an agent pimpng him...Flowers could be the best LT in draft...Flowers could go Top 10"

I forgot he doesn't have an agent. That really does explain why you hear so little about him yet everytime there are reports from team sources they always have Flowers held in really high regard.

I really like the guy and would love it if we drafted him even if we had to move up some to get him. Everything I've read on the guy indicates he is very grounded(no agent further helps that for me), is a hard worker, willing to play through injury and he eats, sleeps and breathes football. How can you not love those attributes in a football player especially an O-lineman where toughness and dedication to honing your craft are of the upmost importance?

My main question on him is how correctable his technique is. It's very sloppy and if he takes coaching really well then he'll be a stud because if he gets his hands on you then its over pretty much. However he could just be a guy that doesn't take to coaching very well. That's not a knock on his character either because there are some people that despite the willingness to learn, repetition in practice and knowing what to do that when its game time just innately revert to bad habits and what's comfortable to them naturally. I would definitely try and spend a lot of time talking to his coaches about that if I were a GM.

Flowers is some grade-A clay, he's just so raw. He's still my #2 OT, but needs lots and lots of coaching. If he got drafted here and sat on the bench week one, huddlers would call him a bust. I hope he's @ 25 just so he's a option.
