Maxx Williams TE Minnesota

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks lists Maxx as one of his four buzzworthy prospects at the Combine today:

"Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota: ... (he had) a strong showing on Friday. Williams was the most natural pass catcher among the tight ends, exhibiting strong hands and impressive ball skills while snatching passes from every angle. Additionally, Williams looked like a refined route runner getting in and out of cuts, validating comparisons to Kyle Rudolph and Jason Witten as a potential playmaker at the next level. ... the fact that he posted a solid 4.37 short-shuttle time suggests he can win consistently at the next level with quickness and burst."

he ran a 4.77 on his 2nd attempt, but 40 yard dash times are meaningless for a TE unless you want him as a deep threat. 10 yard split (10 yard dash) is more important (Maxx ran a pretty good 1.63). Also these dash numbers probably might not even be confirmed as official yet.

What is official is that Maxx has both the 3rd longest arms and 3rd biggest hands of the 20 TEs at the Combine. And his 34.5 vertical is better than Gronk (33.5)

Didn't see his second attempt, that's good to hear. His first was 4.9 something if I remember correctly. I have a feeling a team like Pittsburgh will take him to replace Heath Miller and if we don't snag him at 25 I could see Baltimore, Seattle, or New England getting him at the end of the first. He's going to be a top 5 tight end sooner rather than later.

Sounds good, problem for us is we only gave 2 contracts for longer than 2 years this off-season and they were both to a tight end.

and last off-season we gave out two 5-year contracts to a couple guys that are turning 33 yrs old this year: Jerricho Cotchery and Roman Harper. Each of them have 4 years remaining on their contracts

If you look at Roman Harper's contract ($1.5M guaranteed), it looks like we will be cutting him or asking him to restructure/agree to a new contract after this 2015 season (because his cap hit was $1.5M in 2014, is $1.8M in 2015, but then jumps to $4.7M in 2016).

If you look at Cotchery's contract ($2.3M guaranteed), we could keep him for the next 4 years (his cap hit for his 5 yrs is $1.7M, $1.95M, $1.5M, $1.5M, $1.5M), but obviously we are going to cut him after this season or next (he turns 33 in June)

As for Ed Dickson, if you look at his contact ($2.0M guaranteed), it looks like we will be cutting him or asking him to restructure/agree to a new contract after this 2015 season because his cap hit goes $1.5M, $2.6M, $2.7M).

It's just like you could tell the Cards would be cutting Ginn after the first year of the 3-year contract they signed him to last off-season ($3.25M guaranteed), because his cap hit went $2.25M, $4M, $4M). As for the 2-year contract we signed Ginn to ($1.7M guaranteed), the cap hit is $1.85M, $2.35M

And there is no telling if any of those guys even make the team this year. Last off-season we signed Tiquan Underwood to a 2-year contract (cap hit of $0.93M and $1.1M), and we cut him on Aug 24 before the season started

also note that last month we waived TE Mike McNeill. We signed him to a 2-year contract in March 2014 (for 2014 and 2015), then cut him on Aug 30, 2014 before the season started, then re-signed him on Jan 15, 2015, then cut him on Mar 16, 2015

Fug, didn't realize we gave those two guys five year deals.

Sports Illustrated yesterday:

"Sky could be the limit [for Maxx] ... Creates dream mismatches for quarterbacks downfield, with speed to beat linebackers and pressure safeties plus a wide catch radius. ... Freakishly athletic for the tight end position, which will make him appealing to any team seeking a field-stretching option there. Quickly moves into space on short and intermediate routes, then accelerates to the second level and beyond. Difficult to bring down in the open field—he hurdled lunging defenders on multiple occasions during his college career. More than enough speed to challenge the seam. ... Outstanding body control and hands, too, so quarterbacks can throw him open. ... His playmaking skills are electrifying at times, borderline baffling for a prospect of his size. ... At the very least, should be a red zone staple as a rookie. ... Pro Bowls could be in his future."
