According to David Newton, the Panthers are one of the teams that will have to spend money by next year in order to reach the required cap percentage floor that is required by the CBA.

"Reaching 89 percent shouldn't be an issue for the Panthers. When they extend the contract of quarterback Cam Newton and/or give linebacker Luke Kuechly a new deal they should exceed the number.”

Note that David Newton believes that Cam will probably get a contact worth something north of $15 million per year.

This may play a limited role on what happens in free agency this year. It's just all a part of Gettleman's master plan.

Over the next 2 years...so, they have to reach the floor in 2015 and 2016, if I'm reading the article correctly. Would assume so, since Cam and Luke's contracts are discussed.

Makes sense though, with so much dead money on the cap, we haven't been able to be active shoppers in FA. That will change now with the dead numbers coming off, and the big paydays lined up to our key guys.

This cash under cap problem is a bit of a smoke and mirror situation that resulted from Hurney giving large upfront guarantees (and associated cash) to a number of players prior to the 2012 CBA. As a result, even though we have been fighting the cap the last couple of years, we didn't payout a corresponding amount in cash, leaving us short of the necessary %. This will easily be solved with the upfront cash guarantees to Newton, Kuechly, etc. in the next two years.

Even if the % is not reached, the only penalty is that JR has to pay the difference into a pot that would be divided back to the players.
