For Whom the "Bell" Tolls? Beware, the Bell might toll for us

In an ideal world, we would find the next Anthony Munoz to replace Bell.

Of course it's not Bell that we should be looking to replace, but Jordan Gross.  Getts and Rivera were cocky last year, thinking they could plug in Bell and have Chandler magically turn into something.  They failed to beat the shot clock on that one, big time!

Bulaga is our best our best bet.  He is a LT playing RT.  Why is he playing RT you might ask?  It's Green Bay's way of trying to keep him there on the cheap end.  Their OTs are interchangeable and Bulaga is by far the better out of the two.

I beating this to death, I'm waiting on cuts. This FA class does nothing for me, the "big" names will be resigned, tagged, or overpaid. I do see a few vet min or low cost options.

I hope don dave is focused on draft and taking care of cam, luke, josh norman, olsen, TD, kalil etc. If a jake long/betty/other is cut, then call in the guys and maybe make a few calls.

I am so calling in. Don't you dare screen my call either. When I get done, hes either gonna jump off a bridge or man up and become a beast LT. I am fine with either.

Better than that... Why don't you go to IGO's studio that night and tell Byron in person. . Now that will make a great podcast better. ..

Roos is seriously contemplating retirement.

Bell will not be our starting left tackle under any circumstances this season. It is not in the cards. However much you may believe that the pickings suck, there are some upgrades over Bell, and that's what G-man is looking for.

Look, none of us have ever heard of Remmers before he became the starting RT for the Panthers.  And Remmers did a respectable job at RT.  When Norwell came in as  UDFA, did anyone think he would be the starting LG, and perform like he did?  The OP is correct in that there does not appear to be a stud LT available, but who is the say there is not a 'unknown' LT available that is waiting for an opportunity to prove himself like Norwell, or Remmers?

This is the same question that has been bugging me.  The same talent evaluators that decided Bell and Chandler were adequate NFL Tackles also plucked Remmers from the scrap heap and saw something in Norwell.

I think we have to get an OT in both FA and early in the draft.  It should not take a rocket scientist to figure out this team only played up to it's potential when the offensive line play improved.  And that includes the defensive side of the ball as well.

I would probably take a shot with Roos on a one or two year deal but I agree that list is pretty terrible. There aren't many true LTs in the draft either, they're nearly all RT only guys.

DG might be willing to do that also.  Unfortunately that option might not be available.  Roos could retire, or want a longer term deal, or another team might be willing to pay more.

They are in a vacuum. But factor in the contracts they will be in search of. Do you offer one of these guys free agent LT money just to replace Bell?

If it wasn't for thinking in a vacuum this place wouldn't exist.

Fans tend to think of players in a binary form.  They either are good or bad.  In reality the difference between players is how often they fail.  A great LT might give up 3 sacks a year where as a bad LT might give up 9.

The question for DG is there any LT available that will provide a substantial enough improvement to justify the increased cap cost.

Hopefully there will be but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bell is on the roster next year.

Does Bell suck a majority of his snaps?  Certainly does.  Does he have horrible technique?  Some of the worst in football.  Does he know the offense and did he improve as his right guards play improved?  Yes.  Bro’s, he might just be the best option at LT for us prior to the draft.

NO.

Just.... NO.

I'd rather sign the random fat dude off the street and try him out.  He'd be cheaper and do just as good a job.

If you want to kill your franchise QB, have Byron Bell and/or Nate Chandler as your starters next year.

"Best option" my ass... go to Fat Camp somewhere and you'll find and sign somebody better.

I would bring in a veteran Right Tackle, draft Left Tackle high, Draft tackle and guard late. Sign Bell as a versatile backup plan. Make Chandler prove he deserves to be a part of this team. I think that is the best case scenario for us. If Bell is your backup plan you are going to be ok. If Frenchy Foucalt is your backup plan, run up your credit card at the ABC store.

How many UDFA does the NFL allow a team to sign out of college? 7? 8? 10? 20?

Whatever that number is, sign all OTs.  ONE OF THOSE players who started for years at their colleges will be fugging better than Byron Bell.

How do I know this? Cuz they can't be any worse.

HOW are people thinking that Bell might be the best option in FA for us next year????

If we sign no-one else in FA and spend out entire cap on a single OT it would be worth it.

What part of -33.4 rating suggests this guy could be back next year???
