FO on ESPN: CAR should sign Michael Crabtree

Carolina Panthers: Sign Michael Crabtree

Given the skill set of quarterback Cam Newton, it's not a shock that the Carolina Panthers offense has been built around the run more than the pass since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2011. For four straight seasons, the Panthers' offense has ranked higher in run offense DVOA than in pass offense DVOA. Last year, their running game dipped to 17th in DVOA after three straight years in the top 10. But their pass offense was even worse, ranked just 23rd.

Drafting Kelvin Benjamin last year gave the Panthers a size/speed freak to line up at one receiver spot, the kind of talent defenses need to game-plan against. The next step is to fill the other spot with the kind of receiver who can specifically take advantage of defenses that are either sitting in zone to prevent Newton scrambles, leaving a safety deep to prevent the bomb to Benjamin, or both.

That's where Michael Crabtree comes in. The former San Francisco first-round pick is the kind of excellent route-runner who eats up zone coverages. He doesn't have deep speed, but he's very quick to separate at the break of his routes. Newton is better at throwing from the pocket than most fans realize, and better at throwing with anticipation and hitting receivers after their breaks.

Crabtree struggled in our advanced metrics in 2014, with a below-average DVOA, but that's likely a product of the overall struggles of the entire San Francisco offense. Crabtree was above-average in DVOA each year from 2010 through 2013, finishing sixth in total value by our DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) stat in 2012. As an added bonus, Crabtree is an above-average run blocker on the perimeter, a must for the Carolina offense. It could be just the right fit to help the Panthers follow up their first-ever repeat NFC South title with a first-ever third straight NFC South title.

I'm on board. He should come relatively cheap compared to the higher profile guys on the market (Dez, DT, Cobb, Maclin, T. Smith).

Crabs would be my 3rd realistic choice after Torry and Maclin

I wouldn't mind it, but only for the right price.  He kind of disappeared last year from what I've heard from SF fans, and he's got (or had) that diva attitude.  I'll always remember that huge hold out he had his rookie year.  He's got the potential to be good though, as we saw from Kap's first two years.

But yeah.  Him, KB, and Olsen with a speedster like Ginn or something wouldn't be too bad.

Crab was mediocre as a #1 demanding the attention and having a bad QB throwing to him. Here across from KB, with Cam? He could be a complete beast. I'd love it if we sign him, because that spot on route runner is precisely what we need for Cam.

    • Man, what interesting polarization here.  Some, hard pass while others would jump their own mom to make  the pick (ok, I just inserted that mental image, ha ha). Warren produced despite being the main focal point of the Penn State offense.  I didn't watch Penn State, but that's what a lot of talking heads are saying so take that with a gigantic grain of salt here!  When I watch the highlights and listen to the analysis: dude is a bully.  He's big, strong and fast enough.  Not a home run threat of a guy, but someone who can use his size and strength to his advantage, like how Gronk did.  Does that make him a sure fire HOF player before he plays a snap?  No, of course not! But I think it's also very important to look at what's happened to other high draft pick TEs.  Top 10 TEs rarely make an impact.  Look at Kyle Pitts in ATL.  He's a great athlete, but was he a worthy high draft pick?  TJ Hockinson.  He was suppose to be a can't miss product, and was traded to the Vikings.  Here's a handy list (despite the source, eww): https://thefalconswire.usatoday.com/gallery/nfl-draft-falcons-tight-end-kyle-pitts-hayden-hurst-atlanta/ There has been much better value drafting guys in the 2nd-4th rounds.  I have no idea if Warren will wash out or not, but I'd MUCH rather draft the best pass rusher, CB or even WR than a TE in the top 10.  Now if the Panthers traded down into the late teens or early 20s and they are sold on him being a difference maker...  I guess that's a different conversation. It could also just be a smoke screen.  Since we telegraphed Legette last year, could be gaming some of the other teams.  Or we could have a hard-on for him. I do enjoy the off season 😃
