cbssports.com La Canfora: Panther's highest offseason priority? Sign Cam

People like Gin and Juice can rage type in all caps as much as they want, but the market for franchise QB's is what it is. When you find one, you pay him. It isn't the Panthers or Cam Newton dictating the current market value for the position, it's the rest of the NFL.

As long as everyone pays attention to part that matters most....guaranteed.

Dave could offer him 5yr/200mil, only 5 mil guaranteed.

Tampa could off 3yr/40mil, only 25mil guaranteed

What's the better deal?

I'm not arguing whether/how much it matters.  If he gets more guaranteed money, it's not necessarily because he's better, or worth more than the elite guys.  It's just what the market value currently is.  Maybe he won't demand that much.  I have a feeling Bus will push it there though.

No rage! More like highlighting points of argument. You are correct about the market.

FAIR MARKET VALUE is around 17.5 avg per year

This is such bad reasoning...Rivers and Big Ben would not get Rivers and Big Ben money today...

Every year, the market goes up. Period. For everyone. Drew Brees had the highest paid contract for about 4 seconds before it was one-upped. Romo had the highest for 2 seconds before Cutter one-upped that.

Luck is going to get paid FAR FAR FAR FAR more than Rodgers... Are the Colts crazy? Should they be looking for a new QB?

Just stop.

Luck will get fair market and that market is higher than Cam.

Luck will most likely get Rodgers yrly with about 15 mil less guaranteed

If he took the ex. deal that I gave "from Dave", then his agent should be fired. Sounds awesome, but very poor deal

I wasn't implying the "Dave deal." I was talking in general.

In general, do you think Dave should pretty much give in and meet Cam's demands? Assuming that his demands are elite level?

I see so many fans that seem prepared to riot if Dave doesn't give in and pay him some contract he really isn't worth

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying, as me wanting them to break the bank.  That's not what I'm saying at all.  Cam is our franchise QB.  When the time comes, and they start negotiating his contract, he's going to get whatever the current market value is, even if that is higher than what the elite guys are getting.  His worth compared to them doesn't matter.  It's what the current market value is for a franchise QB, at the time the negotiations start.

Elite or not, really doesn't matter. Contracts for NFL players period are only going up, you can argue all day if they are worth it, but that's for another topic. It's about Newton's importance to the team. He has been carrying our offense on his back since we drafted him.

It's kind of silly to be referencing "demands" like you know what Newton or his agent are thinking.

The only contract numbers that have floated around are pure speculation.

Gettleman has already said a deal will get done, just calm your tits.

By no stretch am I excited in a bad way. Thank god we have a real GM that won't let one player hold the team hostage, unlike the previous manager.

My "concern" is all the Panther bashing that will take place IF Dave doesn't give in to a ridiculous demand (not saying that will happen). So many Cam fans posing as Panther fans that it's absurd.

You can see it already with the "pay that man" type comments. Luck will get the larger deal of rookie class of QBs and deservedly so. Cam should fall between keap/Wilson level and the Luck level

Fair stance. He is the franchise QB and should be paid accordingly

Don't normally agree with you but this is a good post. This offseason is not a one or other situation.

Last thing Gettleman wants is negotiating a contract next off season with all the pressure of Cam potentially facing free agency. Think that's what this article is suggesting.

Whatchu talkin bout Willis? everything I post is gold.

Says who? Luck is about to be one of the most overpaid QB of all time. Fair market value would put Luck in the 20 million range right along with Wilson, Newton, and above Tannehill and Dalton.

Luck's fair market is the NOT the same as Rodgers.

But hey with people like you around, this why if I am Cam and Wilson I wait until the Colts hand Luck 25 million per season and turn to the Seahawks and the Panthers and ask, "Ok so what were you saying again about 20 million not being the right number? Ok I will like to now ask for 24.5 million...you know because I am nice..."
