Ted Ginn Jr could return to Panthers

The Carolina Panthers learned early in 2014 just how much they would miss Ted Ginn Jr. Early and often the punt return game of Carolina cost the team opportunity and momentum. Neither Corey Brown nor Brenton Bersin looked at all competent returning punts.

Now in 2015, there is a real possibility Ted Ginn could return to the Panthers.

Currently, Ginn is under contract in salary cap strapped Arizona where is due to make a base salary of $3,250,00. This number does not match his production in Arizona (14 receptions, 0 TDs). According to Sport Trac , the Cardinals could save $1,750,00 by releasing Ginn this year, enough money to replace his production and then some.

If Ginn is released, I feel the Panthers would again be very interested in Ginn for a few reasons.

First and foremost, Ginn would instantly fix the punt return problem. That fact alone may be enough for the Panthers to pull the trigger.

Second, Cam Newton and Ted Ginn would quickly recover the chemistry they found in 2013. Cam would not be forced to once again get to know a brand new receiver during the offseason. Ginn was well liked by Cam and every other member of the Panthers squad and front office.

Third, Ginn could mentor fellow Ohio State product Corey Brown. Ginn and Brown are a very similar type of player. I think they would have an instant positive vibe between the two of them.

Ginn is 29 years old and could still provide a return game for a few more years.

Admit it, wouldn't you love to see a three wide set with both Ginn and Brown stretching the field as Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen play underneath? I know I would.

Need to focus on getting Torrey Smith, wouldn't mind picking up Ginn as well but a 29 year old return specialist shouldn't be our priority when we have our number 2 receiver slot open.

Is he really a PR/KR stud or does he just seem that way compared to Brenton fuging Bersin? I know he was way over hyped around here as a receiver, but as a KR I didn't think he was that great either. Good, but not great or a "stud." Maybe I need to go look at his numbers and highlights.

In all honesty it could be a bit of both, but the point is he is the best pure return man we've had since a baby 89 and maybe not since Michael Bates.

So you wouldn't want him, at the dollar store rate, as a returner/WR 4-5? FWIW, he dropped 3 passes that year. 68 targets, 36 receptions, 556 yards, 5 TD's, drop rate of 4.4%. Fits said role very well, if you ask me.

Sure, Ginn is an elite return man and would be a great pickup at a vet min rate. That's not what I was talking about, though. The majority were upset DG didn't give him millions like ARI did. That he isn't worth.

Ginn is two or three times as likely to drop a beautiful and perfectly thrown deep ball as he is to actually catch one.

 

i don't care how many catches he's worth.  i just can't watch bersin field a fuggin punt again.  it makes me have panic attacks.

Torrey Smith is a deep threat just like Ginn. Having them both wouldn't help. Smith is a better receiver but Ginn has the return ability. I'd much much much rather sign Ginn than Smith and would be pissed if we signed both. I want us to take a chance on Nicks, sign Ginn and draft 2 more WRs, then we wouldn't have to worry about it. Then we'd still likely have money for Free, Bulaga, or Dunlap or some FA veteran tackle.

Nicks is garbage man. Torrey Smith is a good receiver with speed to go across from Kelvin Benjamin and Ginn is a great return man.

You should be happy if we got both. I doubt Ginn would even see the field much on offense. When we bring him in for a visit you basically say hey teddy you are basically coming as a special teams guy and also 4/5 receiver. We will pay you X dollars for that role.

Maybe after all these years he still has hope as a WR in his mind, but the FA market will tell him otherwise.

Torrey Smith is not our answer for #2 receiver. He is going to get overpaid, and frankly, isn't that good. Maclin would be a huge signing but there's literally zero chance we could sign him, and that's assuming the Eagles don't lock him up, which they will.
