Reminds me of two things I really wish more fans would catch on to.

Number One: The decision on this isn't being made by Jerry Richardson.

It's being made by Dave Gettleman. Jerry Richardson's role is simply tacit approval / non-interference.

As I've said many times, anyone who wants to question that should take a moment and answer what color jersey Steve Smith is wearing these days.

Number Two: It isn't an image decision. It's a business decision.

Here's a challenge. Go to a bookie and bet ten thousand dollars of your own money that Greg Hardy will stay completely out of trouble for the next five years. Don't have ten thousand to bet? Put up your car, or your house, or something else of value.

You comfortable with that?

Well, the Panthers would be wagering a whole lot more than ten thousand on that bet if they offer Hardy a big contract. And please don't give me the "he'll play for less" argument. He reportedly turned down a more than fair 8 million per year contract before he was franchised. It's delusional to think he'll actually play for cheap given his past actions.

And let's be clear: Ron Rivera wants him back. He's made it plain in many things he's said, but it's not his decision.

Given Rivera's track record when it comes to personnel decisions, that's probably a good thing.

I wouldn't make that bet for any player in any league.. Again we don't know any of these guys..

Has anyone talked about why anyone would pay $10+ million a year for a guy who sat out a year? Or is that no longer an issue in 2015?

I'd think in such a physical position, I'd be very wary of someone who has had that much time out of football.

See I don't think this is going to be good enough. Mario is a good situational pass rusher but he can't play the run all that well at all. I personally also think Ealy is going to need another year of grooming before we can expect him to be a solid contributor/starter. Adding another rookie to the mix imo again will just be another situational player. Maybe we can bring someone in from FA? Idk our dline definitely takes a few steps back without Hardy we gotta figure something out.

 

Wishful thinking but, Jason Pierre Paul would fill Hardy's shoes quite nicely.

I know how much we all love Peter King around here,  but I still do find myself reading MMQB.  Here's what he said about the Hardy and how the league is going to be watching his trial:

Because if he’s found culpable on even some of the heinous charges brought last year in an alleged assault of his girlfriend, you can bet owner Jerry Richardson will strongly consider letting Hardy go so as not to sully the reputation of his franchise. This is one of the best pass-rushers in football, and if he’s on the street, teams will have to consider what the NFL sanction against him would be in this sensitive time of domestic violence—and then consider if they might want to take on the risk of employing him, knowing they’d have to cut the cord for good if he has one more violation of the policy.

I think it's pretty spot on.  The real trepidation is the likelihood of the problems surfacing again.  Greg has a history of questionable behavior from his days at Ole Miss, to the motocycle wreck, and he did take a picture of his speedometer doing 100 in his Bently...  On their own, it looks like a young guy making dumb young guy mistakes from which he will learn and grow.  Then add in the domestic violence charges and conviction...  Considering his very off kilter personality, then teams have plenty of reason to pause in their pursuit of Hardy.
