Rivera reassigns special teams coach Rodgers, promotes DeHaven

DeHaven needs an assistant, FWIW.  He's a very good ST coach.  He's also old.

When I suggested Rodgers get reassigned (anyone can be all OMGZ FIRE HIM!!!!!), I suggested he be a Rivera chief-of-staff, a guy to handle the details, really assist the head coach in meaningful game detail.   Hopefully it's something of that nature.   Of course, it's too late to go add any vet assistants, and that's somewhat regrettable, but if they wanted to have Dehaven anyway, it's moot to wish for anything else.

Any thoughts on Shawn Slocum?

yeah I'd be into that.

The question might end up being whether he'd rather go to college again - if there are some roles open for defensive coordinator, since I see some college DC in his background.

FWIW on the above idea of him being an O QC guy - I know Rodgers has defensive coaching experience (some reports, and more to the point plenty of posters, seem to gloss over that), but I don't know where they'd put him on D.

someone tell me why this is good, I mean, its the same people. If you slice up a turd, rearrange the pieces and put it back together, its still a turd, right?

Seem like a plausible analogy on the surface but I think this tells us something else is going on. Something that likely led to a dysfunctionally led unit that proved as much on the field. I think it was clear to most, including players, that the assistant had more talent or at least a better grip on a successful approach than the boss.

I've seen this before. Not in sports. Smart guy enters the room as understudy with some pedigree and commands immediate respect for whatever reason. A polite struggle ensues. Department suffers. No focus. Grumbling comes from above. Struggle becomes less polite. Department continues on downward slope. More heat. Less polite. The help breaks rank to bring the dysfunction to light. Department is off the rails. Brass looks deeper and shows "real" concern. Whether or not they find real fault they take the path of least resistance based on feedback from the help even if that means putting the loyal long-timer out to pasture.

This theory explains a crap product on the field all season and what happened today. It lends to the thinking that the help, err, the players may have more confidence in or respect for the new guy. Can't be bad. A shake up at the very least can't be bad for this particular "department".

I'd discussed with someone the idea of moving Rodgers to some other spot like that (forget who).
